On this Makerspace Monday, Rust Library takes us back to warmer days when a Loudoun resident brought a basalt stone home from their vacation at Lake Superior, Michigan. At the Rust Makerspace, they engraved a silhouette design onto the stone using the Glowforge laser cutter.

Come to the Ashburn Library during March-April to view the work of Vinton Pickens. These drawings are ink on paper and depict parts of Loudoun County from 1972-1977. Pickens has exhibited her work at the Corcoran Museum, Touchstone, and Franz Bader Galleries in Washington, DC. She was also a political activist in Loudoun County whose actions left an enduring effect. Pickens was also named Loudoun's 1986 Citizen of the Year. These drawings are an important part of the Loudoun County Art Collection, which features over 200 works of art donated by Loudoun artists and art collectors.

Maker Monday at Rust Library: Can you guess how this was made?

While it may seem like a drawing, this is actually an engraving! The patron used the Glowforge laser cutter to imprint a photo of his pet onto a ceramic tile, and then colored it with a permanent marker. He specially edited the photo before engraving, converting it to black and white in order to sharpen the contrast. Got any pet lovers in your life who would love something like this?

Our Winter Reading Challenge is underway! Sign up to make books a part of your seasonal reset at library.loudoun.gov/winterread. Then, use our online form to log the number of hours you spend reading throughout January and February. You can collect up to seven raffle tickets and unlock bonus activities, all from the comfort of your couch. Friday, Feb. 28, you will be automatically entered into a grand-prize drawing with however many raffle tickets you've earned. One teen and one adult will be drawn at each of LCPL’s 10 branches to win themed gift baskets. Winners will be contacted in March. Having an LCPL library card is not required to enter.
