Celebrating July 4th: With visitors who brought the Joy!
As we reflect on and celebrate America’s 250th birthday, this past year has reminded us that the road to July 4th has not been without challenge. We have witnessed division, exclusion, and even assaults on the very history that tells the story of our republic - all unfolding in a cycle of incivility that distracts from the meaning of Independence Day.
Yet across North America, a different story has been unfolding.
Canada, the United States, and Mexico - host communities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup - have spent these months preparing for one of the world’s largest celebrations of athletic excellence and global connection. That preparation has been rooted in outreach, inclusion, and collaboration. Officials, businesses, civic leaders, and community stakeholders & residents have come together to ensure that fans from every corner of the world feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated.
And when the visitors arrived, they brought something powerful with them.
We saw fans from Egypt and Argentina revel in the glory of a hard‑won victory and then embrace their opponents. We saw fans from Australia and Cape Verde embody perseverance, pride, and sportsmanship even after defeat. They came with enthusiasm for their teams - but an even greater joy for the sport itself. They fought hard, respected their opponents, and came together once the final whistle blew.
In many ways, they echoed the journeys of their ancestors who came to America generations ago: bringing hard work, ingenuity, culture, and a belief in contributing to the greater good.
Their presence reminded us of something essential.
Joy is a civic virtue. Camaraderie is a national strength. And visitors - whether immigrants of the past or fans of today - often bring the very spirit we need most.
As we celebrate July 4th, may we remember that the promise of America has always been renewed by those who arrive with hope, pride, and a willingness to share their gifts. This year, the visitors reminded us that unity is possible, community is powerful, and joy is contagious.
