Firefighting is a physically demanding profession. Tasks like throwing ladders, carrying victims, and performing intense work during a structure fire while on bottled air all requires a high level of cardiovascular fitness and strength.

To ensure certain standards our met, our firefighters perform the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) every year. This test replicates several movements performed on the fire ground, and is timed and scored. Prospective firefighters must pass this test before being hired, too.

The first section of the PAT includes six stations involving a stair climb with a hose pack, hoisting a 50-pound bag, a pulley extension, a charged hoseline extension, dragging a 160-pound dummy for 75 ft., and a fan carry. The test finishes with an aerobic test involving a weighted vest run for a quarter mile. 💪 Staying fit is one of the many ways we stay prepared to serve our community!

Fire is fast! In fact, due to home furnishings, synthetic materials and modern construction, today's home fires are faster than they were 20 years ago. You could have as little as two minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds in the event of a fire.

Here are two important tips to stay safe:

• Working smoke alarms provide early detection and warning, giving you and loved ones time to get outside quickly. Smoke alarms should be installed in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. Smoke alarms save lives!
• Have a home fire escape plan and practice it with your family. Know two ways out of every room and set a safe outdoor meeting space to evacuate to.

Have a happy Labor Day weekend, everyone! This is typically a busy weekend, so remember to plan with fire/life safety in mind. Keep an eye on the grill when in use, and drive safely. Our firefighters will be out to at local grocery stores all weekend and we hope to see you out and about.

As a reminder, our administrative Headquarters and Dave's Locker will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 for Labor Day. However, our emergency services never take a holiday— our crews are only one call away in the event of an emergency.

👢 It's time to give Muscular Dystrophy the boot! Every year, our firefighter stand boot in hand while participating in the national Fill the Boot campaign to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

All though the Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-7th), you'll see our firefighters at participating locations and grocery stores throughout the community. Every single dollar makes a difference and can fund research and treatments to empower people living with neuromuscular disease to live longer, more independent lives.

If you see us, come ask about why we support this cause! Our firefighters raise funds on behalf of Arvada Fire and Arvada Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4056. Online donations are also accepted. We appreciate everyone who joins us in this effort!

🚒 How much do you think a fire engine costs? Take your guess…

Engine 58 was placed into service in 2026. When it was purchased several years earlier, the cost was $942,543.

The engine it replaced was purchased for $405,111 and placed into service in 2011.

That’s an increase of more than 130% in about 15 years.

And here’s the part that really puts today’s costs into perspective: if we purchased that same engine today, the quoted price would be nearly $1.37 million.

Our engines typically serve for about 15 years as frontline apparatus followed by another 5 years in reserve status. We work hard to get the most out of this equipment. Our firefighters perform rigorous daily upkeep, our mechanics provide regular maintenance, and our forward-thinking apparatus replacement plan helps us prepare for these major investments. But eventually, every fire engine reaches the end of its service life and must be replaced in accordance with NFPA standards.

Costs continue to rise for fire departments, impacting fire apparatus, ambulances, protective gear and more. You can learn more at talkarvadafireco.com.

🩸 The Arvada Fire Blood Drive with Vitalant - Colorado is off and running. The drive is from 10 AM - 2 PM today at the Training Center at 6651 Indiana St. We still have donation spots open and ready to fill. Walk-ins are welcome. Your one donation could save up to 3 lives — come be a hero!

We’ve had plenty of firefighters and members of the public donating already this morning. Pictured here is recently retired Firefighter Widom making a donation. He heard about the nationwide low blood supply, and also knows firsthand the impact donations can make for our prehospital whole blood program. These are two great reasons that led to him making his first ever blood donation.

Wherever your reason, donating blood is one of the most selfless gifts you can give.. Come on over and join us!

Our logistics team recently made a field trip to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance to donate old fire hose! The hose will be used for habitat enrichment for the animals and can be repurposed into toys, swings and hammocks.

Every year, we conduct annual hose testing to ensure our equipment meets certain standards. Hose that doesn't pass the test is retired from service. We're always looking for creative ways to recycle or reuse the hose, and several times we've been able to partner with the Denver Zoo. The durability and texture of fire hose makes for a great item in an exhibit.

After being decommissioned, the hose was cleaned and prepared for delivery. Our logistics specialists Matt and Bob transported the hose and met with Zookeeper Amanda, who is the daughter of our very own former dispatcher and current receptionist Jill O’Brian. Amanda gave our team a tour of a few exhibits and Bob even had the honor of feeding a camel.

Next time you are at the zoo, keep an eye out for the creative ways the fire hose is used! 🦒🐫
