Today Mayor Youtsey issued a proclamation recognizing the month of October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The proclamation recognizes the effects that domestic violence has on families; disrupting relationships, creating fear and causing lasting physical, emotional, and psychological harm. It also recognizes the tremendous courage of survivors as they speak out and seek safety.

The proclamation recognizes Grammy's House as a safe and supportive environment for survivors and their children. They offer resources, shelter, and compassionate assistance in some of life's most difficult moments.

Representatives from Grammy's House were present for the issuing of the proclamation. Anyone in need can reach out to them at 575-748-1198 or their 24/7 emergency line at 575-365-5144. You can also visit them at 811 W. Texas Ave.

How come so many of our fire hydrants have blue tops? 🤔

What may seem like the work of Carlsbad vandals is actually good news for Artesia, and it has to do with the recent testing we did of our hydrants. 🚒

Stronger hydrants go a long way in keeping us safe. Thank you to our fire, water, and infrastructure departments for all their work in improving our fire hydrants! 👏

The transfer station is open again for both commercial and residential traffic. Despite the ominous looking clouds, conditions have improved enough at the Sandpoint Landfill to where our trailers were able to unload.

Thank you for your patience during this interruption. We are happy to be back to regular operations.

Renovations are going on at the senior center! The center is receiving new flooring and a new parking lot thanks to grant money we received earlier in the year.

These projects began a few weeks ago. The new flooring is nearly complete, but the work on the parking lot was delayed due to all the recent rain. We anticipate work on the parking lot will take a few more weeks.

While these projects are underway, the senior center has been operating out of the old rec center building. We appreciate everyone's patience during the relocation. We're excited to reach the finish line on these upgrades!

As you may have heard already, Interim Police Chief Pete Quiñones was named permanent Police Chief last night.

The move was approved by city council. Quiñones has been serving as Interim Chief since July 1st following the retirement of former Police Chief Kirk Roberts.

Quiñones has served in a variety of leadership and operational roles throughout his 20+ year career with the Artesia Police Department. Based on his skills and experience, we trust that he will continue to successfully lead the department as our permanent Police Chief.

Congratulations, Police Chief Pete Quiñones!

Please note that the transfer station will be closed to everyone and trash trucks will not be running tomorrow. All of the trailers we use to haul trash to the landfill are full, and the Sandpoint Landfill has been too muddy for our trailers to get in and unload.

The transfer station is aiming to open on Friday if conditions improve. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In case you missed it, city council recently approved new membership options at the rec center. 🤝

The change adds annual membership plans for individuals. There are different price points for each age bracket. The annual options offer big savings compared to paying the monthly rate for a whole year. 💸

The rec center is open from 5:30am-8:30pm daily. Stop by and get set up with a membership! 🏋️

Due to heavy rain in the forecast, our infrastructure team has prepared more sandbags. These are available again at the streets department office at Jaycee Park. Again, we ask that you take no more than 10 bags.

There are also piles of sand, empty bags, and shovels. If you are able, please fill your own sandbag so that the pre-filled bags can go to those who are unable to fill their own bag.

The streets department office is on 27th street in Jaycee Park. If you take the south entrance into the park, 27th street is the left turn you can make after you cross the bridge.
