The City of Arroyo Grande wishes all a safe and Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth marks Emancipation Day, a day of remembrance of African American culture. It was first celebrated in Texas on June 19, 1865 to commemorate the end of slavery and enslaved people first learning of the Emancipation Proclamation.

🔥 Prescribed Burn Scheduled Along The Pike

Five Cities Fire Authority, in coordination with the City of Arroyo Grande and the Temple of the People - Halcyon Township, will conduct a prescribed pile burn along The Pike on Friday, June 19, 2026.

The burn is intended to reduce wildfire risk by removing accumulated eucalyptus slash, a highly flammable vegetation material. Smoke will be visible between approximately 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area, as fire personnel and equipment may be present along roadways.

This is a planned and permitted operation. If weather or air quality conditions become unfavorable, the burn may be postponed.

For questions, please contact Five Cities Fire Authority at (805) 473-5490.

City Hall will be temporarily “under cover” as the building is tented for scheduled termite treatment. 🏛️

Consider it some much-needed maintenance to keep this public facility in top shape for the community we serve. While City Hall may look a little different for a few days, this proactive treatment helps protect the building for years to come.

To minimize impacts to the public, the treatment has been scheduled over the Juneteenth holiday and weekend while City offices are already closed.

City services will resume as scheduled on Monday morning.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we handle a little behind-the-scenes pest control over the long weekend!

The City of Arroyo Grande is pleased to announce the appointment of Krystin Rice as the City's new Director of Community Development. Rice will begin her new role on July 20, 2026.

Rice brings more than two decades of experience leading community development, planning, and development services programs for California municipalities, including Thousand Oaks and Calabasas. Throughout her career, she has earned a reputation for balancing thoughtful community planning with responsive customer service, organizational leadership, and effective implementation of complex development initiatives.

As Director of Community Development, Rice will oversee the City's Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement functions while helping to guide some of Arroyo Grande's most important long-term initiatives, including the implementation of the General Plan, the achievement of housing goals, and the continued revitalization of East Grand Avenue.

Rice joins Arroyo Grande at a pivotal time as the City advances key housing, economic development, and infrastructure initiatives designed to enhance the quality of life while preserving the community's small-town character and historic charm.

"Krystin's background, leadership experience, and commitment to public service make her an outstanding addition to our organization," said Arroyo Grande City Manager Matthew Downing. "Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an exceptional ability to build consensus, solve complex community development challenges, and deliver results. As Arroyo Grande continues to evolve, her experience and vision will help us elevate the level of service and planning excellence our residents deserve while preserving the character and sense of place that make Arroyo Grande so special."

Rice holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor’s in Urban Studies and Planning from California State University, Northridge. She has earned recognition for her contributions to long-range planning and community development, including work associated with award-winning planning efforts.

"I am honored to join the City of Arroyo Grande and serve this remarkable community," said Rice. "I look forward to working alongside City staff, residents, businesses, and the community to help shape Arroyo Grande's future while preserving the qualities that make it such a unique and desirable place to live, work, and visit."

📢 At the June 9 meeting, the Arroyo Grande City Council unanimously voted to place a cannabis business tax measure on the November 3, 2026, ballot.

🛣️ While Arroyo Grande currently prohibits local commercial cannabis activity, this measure would keep any revenue generated from possible future cannabis sales local. The City could generate an estimated $500,000 annually for Arroyo Grande’s infrastructure, public safety and recreation programs.

💼This measure does not automatically open or approve cannabis businesses. Instead, it establishes the legal framework for taxing them. If approved by voters, the tax would only apply to cannabis businesses and consumers, meaning residents who do not purchase cannabis would not pay anything.
