Citizens for Squirrel Point

Citizens for Squirrel Point Citizens for Squirrel Point (CSP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2002 to preserve the lighthouse property for the benefit of the public.

Located on Arrowsic Island, Squirrel Point Light is one of four navigational aids dating back to 1898 along the Kennebec River's 11 mile stretch between the Atlantic Ocean and Bath, Maine. Our mission is to preserve and restore the buildings and grounds, provide public access, and educate the community about this historic landmark. Squirrel Point Light lies at the end of 2/3 mile trail in Arrowsic

, Maine, approximately 10 miles from the City of Bath. The footpath through protected forests and wetlands is uneven and rough in places. At times of exceptionally high tides, the foot bridge along the trail may be submerged. There are no restrooms, and the buildings are not open to visit, except special occasions such as the Maine Open Lighthouse Day. The light at Squirrel Point is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as an aid to navigation. Buildings on site include the light tower, keeper’s house, boat house, oil house and barn. CSP is a non-profit volunteer organization funded entirely by donations and grants. Please join the effort to restore Squirrel Point Light! We are also raising funds to replace the bridge. Visit www.squirrelpoint.org for detailed directions and to learn more.

Thank you to all who made the trek to Squirrel Point Light for Maine Open Lighthouse Day yesterday! Citizens for Squirrel Point welcomed over 150 visitors from 15 states and two countries, including Morse High School seniors taking part in a photo shoot, an enthusiastic group from Bowdoin College, ten awesome volunteers, and a handful of well-behaved pups.

One of our volunteers, a frequent guest of light keeper Clarence Skofield and family years ago, led tours of the keeper’s house and shared memories of his visits. And we finally got to put our new lighthouse stamp to use!

We appreciate all who came out and learned about what’s next in restoring this historic treasure. If you weren’t able to visit but want to get involved, please be in touch.

Excited to welcome visitors near and far tomorrow, Sept. 13, for Maine Open Lighthouse Day! If you've never been to Squirrel Point Light, a few important notes: it's about a 2/3 mile walk, and a bit rough in places. There are no restrooms on site and no running water. Most importantly, we are in Arrowsic, not Phippsburg, despite what your GPS tells you! Visit squirrelpoint.org for directions and more information. Have a wonderful Saturday all!

NEW DATE - Our volunteer work day has been changed to SUNDAY. (Rain on Saturday - really?!)

We need your help! Join us at Squirrel Point Light for our volunteer work party SUNDAY, June 29 from 1 PM to 4 PM as we tackle several grounds and construction projects. We are seeking:
· A few experienced carpenters and able assistants to undertake two projects, including construction of new cellar bulkhead doors for the keeper’s house and repair of a section of ramp to the lighthouse
· A few people to repaint one of the exterior walls of the boat house
· 6+ people to organize the workshop, tidy the keeper’s house, cut brush and other outdoor projects

Building materials, painting supplies and a generator will be on site. Volunteers will need to bring their own tools, loppers and lunch or snacks. For questions and to register, send a private message here or visit www.squirrelpoint.org. We look forward to seeing you! Details will be shared with registered volunteers closer to the date. Rain day Sunday, June 29.

Citizens for Squirrel Point is grieving the loss of Roman H. Wasilewski, past President and board member to the last. Roman picked up leadership from the former board in 2015, and from "Lighthouse Lee" Johnson, who founded CSP to rescue Squirrel Point Light from a real estate developer who had a very different vision for the property. Roman obtained numerous grants to start the conservation and restoration of the structures at Squirrel Point and worked tirelessly to maintain public access to this historic landmark. From organizing volunteer cleanups to hosting planning sessions over one of his signature meals, Roman’s wit, warmth and good humor always showed through. He could often be seen walking the lighthouse and Bald Head trails and kayaking the Kennebec and Back Rivers. We miss you, Roman!

We’re excited to welcome friends old and new to Maine Open Lighthouse Day tomorrow! Our volunteers will be there from 10 AM to 3 PM. The keeper’s house will be open, and also the boathouse.

If you’ve never visited us, the 2/3 mile trail is rough in places, and there are no restrooms at the lighthouse. Most importantly, we are located in Arrowsic. Your app may tell you that driving to Phippsburg is the shortest distance, but then you’re on the other side of the river! 🤍

For more info and detailed directions visit www.squirrelpoint.org. Hope to see you!
