If I had a nickel for every time this happened, I would be a rich woman......
Again today, as happens multiple times a week, I was asked to notarize a vehicle title transfer where the seller simply signed the back of the title. The buyer had a copy of their driver's license. They were told by someone who is no longer a Notary Public (who clearly accepted this in their notary practice) that this was sufficient.
IT IS NOT.
Louisiana has very specific requirements for notarizing title transfers. and this practice, as I just described, is not legal. I know people rely on advice that seems reliable, but incorrect guidance can cause major problems down the road. I'll continue sharing information to help our neighbors understand what's actually required so these transactions are done correctly and safely.
If you are heading out of town to purchase a vehicle, call me. I can walk you through what needs to happen. I can tell you the best practice and even give you a back-up plan. Even if I'm not being asked to do the Notary work, I am here to help. Call me, text, send a FB message. Let me help you get it right.
