What a great event out in Texas! The More Bass, Less Grass Pond Management Workshop was a huge success.

We had the opportunity to bring one of our amphibious w**d harvesters to display, allowing attendees to see the equipment up close, ask questions, and learn more about the many tools available for effective pond and lake management.

When we first showed up to this pond, this kid was fishing every day…
but all he could catch were small, unhealthy fish—mostly trash catfish that weren’t supposed to even be there.

The pond had been completely neglected. Overgrown, out of balance, and honestly… on its way to being a lost cause.

Field Case 2: Systemic issues

Aquatic plants don’t just impact fisheries, they clue you in on the type on environment you are dealing with.

This pond was overrun with aquatic vegetation which was negatively impacting the fishery and placing it at a high risk for a summer time fish kill. It is also an indicator that the pond has systemic issues that we will be addressing as part of a hybrid management plan for long term control.

Field Case 1: Bad advice = Broken Fisheries

These photos capture the outcome of what a poor stocking plan looks like. This bass fishery was stocked with hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, and minnows. Not only was the fish combination bad, the stocking strategy and ratios were not designed for success either. The end result…. Tons of stunted bass and ONE, yes one, sunfish left in the pond.

What’s worse is we surveyed a newer pond stocked the same way and after only a few years it was already well on its way to this condition.

Be careful where you get stocking advice from and remember that stocking rates should be catered to your goals and environment not just some copy and paste template or prebuilt “plan.”

Trophy bass management is a structure not a special fingerling.

8 months, 13.5 inches and 2lbs… those are the stats in the bass in this photo. Does this fish have good genetics?

Sure…

is that why it grew like it did?

No.

You can spend thousands on the best genetics in the world but if you don’t have the right environment they still won’t grow like this.

Mind blowing stats…

These bass weighed in at: 18.75in - 6.42lbs, 19in - 6.32lbs , and 19in - 6.46lbs, with relative weights ranging from 163% to 169%.

This is the kind of performance that is possible when your lake is optimized from the ground up.
