NEW MOTORS DEPUTIES

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office motorcycle unit welcomed two new deputies to its fleet this week with a recognition ceremony held June 17 at the SCSO substation in Arlington. Deputies L. Brown and C. Wooten completed the two-week school on May 29 and will continue their training as members of the Traffic/Motors/DUI bureau

Deputy Brown has been with SCSO since 2018. Deputy Wooten has been with SCSO since 2024. Assistant Chief Derek Mills, Chief Inspector Mark Kellerhall, Captain Mark Wagner, Lieutenant Marcus Clark, and Sergeant Sharif James, congratulated the pair on their new assignment.

The SCSO Motor School certification is recognized nationwide and is an intensive 80-hour course of instruction. It is one of the most challenging training programs to complete, with a historical failure rate ranging from 50% to 75%. By the third day of training, students are often physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. This rigorous course prepares candidates to safely and effectively operate a 900-pound Harley-Davidson motorcycle at both slow and high speeds while mastering proper braking techniques, throttle control, and friction-zone management.

Both Deputy Brown and Deputy Wooten embraced the instruction provided by their training staff, applied the lessons taught, and remained committed through every challenge. Their discipline, determination, and willingness are a testament to this achievement.

PATROL DEPUTY OF THE MONTH NAMED FOR MAY 2026

On Wednesday, June 17, at the Sheriff’s Office substation in Arlington, Deputy J. Washington was honored as Deputy of the Month for May 2026. Since completing field training and being released to solo patrol, Deputy Washington has quickly established herself as one of the most productive deputies on the shift. Her ability to identify criminal activity during routine patrol operations has resulted in the removal of dangerous drugs, illegal fi****ms, and wanted violent offenders from our community.

During the month of May 2026 alone, Deputy Washington compiled an impressive list of several enforcement actions that directly contributed to the safety and well-being of Shelby County residents. Collectively, Deputy Washington's efforts during this period resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illegal narcotics, including ma*****na, co***ne, fentanyl, oxycodone, and THC products. She also recovered multiple fi****ms, including a stolen firearm, removed a violent felony fugitive from the streets, and disrupted suspected narcotics trafficking operations through the seizure of drug paraphernalia, currency, and a vehicle utilized in criminal activity.

Deputy Washington, who works the afternoon shift, has served with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office as a full-time deputy since 2024.
