Our residents have been getting into the spooky spirit with pumpkin decorating, Trunk or Treats, costume fun, and more across our communities.

A special thank you to Audrey and Courtney Portner for once again collecting costumes for our residents. They gathered nearly 500 costumes through collection boxes at Perfect Pointe Dance Studio, Arlington, VA, Virginia Dance Conservatory , Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, and St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Maryland. Thank you also to St. Timothy and St. Athanasius Coptic Orthodox Church for hosting a fun-filled family night for our residents!

Watch the video to witness the spooky fun for yourself!

This past weekend, residents from five AHC communities gathered at The Spire for Ignite Day, the kickoff of the Community Leadership Institute with NeighborWorks America .

Residents explored their strengths and learned about several different ways to lead a team, a reminder that leadership can look different for everyone.

The training will continue in November with virtual workshops on community organizing, volunteer engagement, and more. We’re proud of these resident leaders and look forward to seeing where they take it next.

Students from Lutheran College Washington Semester (LCWS) got into the Halloween spirit by putting together themed snack bags for students in our education programs. Snack bags keep our young students fueled for homework and afterschool activities.

Thank you to Lutheran College Washington Semester for the creativity and care they brought to every bag!

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) was founded in 1975 to help people facing housing insecurity.

Over time, we saw that a stable home opens the door to meeting other needs. As we grew across the National Capital region, so did its health and social supports for residents.

Hear from Catherine Bucknam, former VP of Community Relations, and Paul Bernard, President & CEO, on how we’ve answered community needs for 50 years.

We're excited to announce the winners of AHC’s 50th Anniversary Youth Art & Video Contests. Young residents answered the question: “What does AHC mean to you?” Through their creativity, participants shared the impact AHC has had on their lives, families, and communities.

We're proud to recognize our first-place winners, who joined us for our 50th celebration earlier this month: Damary Granados Portillo (Art Contest) and Messiah Snowden (Video Contest).

We're grateful to all of the young residents who participated and helped showcase AHC’s impact over the past five decades. View all winning entries and honorable mentions in the event recap: https://ahcommunities.org/news/ahc-50th-anniversary-celebration/.

From award-winning Allium Place to the upcoming redevelopment with Goodwill of Greater Washington, Harkins has been an invaluable partner in some of AHC’s most innovative projects.
