Armstrong Ambulance Service *Official Page* A Commitment to Caring: The Story of Founder William F. Armstrong In 1945, upon return from his tour of duty with the U.S. Bill obliged.

Marine Corps, Bill Armstrong was first inspired to help others by observing his mother. A registered nurse, she frequently looked after friends and family who were ill or injured. Her compassionate nature rubbed off on Bill. In fact, one day, a neighbor asked if he would drive him to Massachusetts General Hospital for daily treatment. As he waited in the hospital lobby, Bill watched the ambulances

transport the sick and injured … this image formed a lasting impression, which would prove to be the guiding force of his career. In 1946, Bill purchased his first Cadillac ambulance. Along with a partner, he formed Arlington Ambulance Service. During the early months, the duo operated from Bill’s family home. Business was tough and Bill’s partner decided to resign from the company. As Bill ventured out on his own, Armstrong Ambulance Service started anew. In those early years, no laws or regulations governed the ambulance business and competition began to spread. But because of his reputation for care and compassion, Bill Armstrong had become an industry leader. He was instrumental in forming the Massachusetts Ambulance Association, which was developed to ensure the highest standards of care throughout the state by all ambulance services. Armstrong Ambulance Service: On the Path of Progress...
As business burgeoned, Bill relocated several times throughout the Arlington area. During the early 1980s, under Bill’s leadership, the company became a pioneer in the field of advanced life support. Today, Armstrong Ambulance celebrates over 65 years of service. The company employs 350 people and operates a fleet of more than 90 vehicles, which are stationed out of 10 satellite locations. Personnel provide care and transportation to more than 100,000 patients annually. The Armstrong family continues to be a driving force behind the hallmark of care and principles of leadership that Bill inspired more than 60 years ago. They are steadfast in their commitment to providing quality service for generations to come.

One year ago, we lost a truly special member of the Armstrong team, Mary Ann Vacherweill.

Mary Ann was more than an EMT - she was a mentor, a friend, a devoted mother, and a compassionate caregiver who dedicated herself to helping others. Her kindness, infectious smile, sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to her patients left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Whether she was caring for a patient, supporting a coworker, or sharing a laugh around the station, Mary Ann had a way of making people feel valued and cared for. She embodied the very best of EMS and reminded us all of the importance of compassion, friendship, and living life to the fullest.

We pause to remember Mary Ann and the incredible legacy she left behind. Though she is deeply missed, her spirit continues to live on through the countless lives she touched and the memories we continue to cherish.

Forever remembered. Forever missed. ❤️

Another semester in the books! 🎓🚑

This spring, we had the privilege of welcoming 5 student interns (two not pictured) from Arlington High School for a firsthand look at the world of EMS.

Throughout the semester, students spent time alongside our crews, observing emergency responses, patient care, ambulance operations, and the teamwork that keeps our communities safe. From ride-alongs to conversations with EMS professionals, they gained valuable insight into careers in healthcare and public safety.

And a few of our interns are already planning to enroll in EMT courses as they take the next steps toward careers in EMS and healthcare.

A special thank you to our crews and mentors who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences. We wish our interns the very best as they continue their educational journeys and pursue their future careers!

Emergencies Start With Education and Training🚨

Last week, our very own Field Operations Manager Kcee B. and Paramedic Haywad Y. attended FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Healthcare Leadership for Mass Casualty Incidents course at the Center for Domestic Preparedness facility in Anniston, Alabama. This course is designed to prepare healthcare leaders and emergency responders to effectively manage large-scale emergencies and all-hazards disasters.

Throughout the training, Kcee and Haywad focused on emergency management, setting up Incident Command, coordinating resources, triaging patients, and managing standards of care during crises. They also explored topics such as public information, risk communication, palliative care, and mass-fatality management.

The course brought together professionals from EMS, hospitals, law enforcement, public health agencies, emergency management organizations, and community groups, emphasizing the importance of collaboration during disaster response efforts.

Not only was this such a great opportunity, but it also equipped both Kcee and Haywad with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle potential incidents and continue strengthening our response capabilities.

This week is National CPR & AED Awareness Week - a reminder that anyone can save a life. Immediate action can make all the difference during a cardiac emergency.

According to the American Heart Association:

❤ More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the U.S. each year
❤ About 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home
❤ For every minute without CPR or defibrillation, a person’s chance of survival decreases by 7-10%

You do not have to be a healthcare professional to make a difference. Learning hands-only CPR and how to use an AED can help save the life of a family member, friend, coworker, or neighbor.

Interested in learning CPR or getting certified? Search online for a CPR/AED class near you and be ready when every second counts.

Look Twice. Save a Life. 🏍️🚑

Motorcycles and e-bikes are everywhere this time of year - and one quick glance isn’t always enough. Whether you’re driving, riding, or cycling, staying alert can make all the difference. 🚑

As more riders hit the roads, safety is everyone’s responsibility.

For drivers:
🚗 Check blind spots and mirrors carefully
🚗 Give motorcycles and e-bikes extra space
🚗 Stay alert and avoid distracted driving
🚗 Use turn signals early and clearly

For riders:
🏍 Wear a DOT approved helmet and stay visible
🏍 Follow traffic laws and ride defensively
🏍 Watch your speed, especially in busy areas

As first responders, we see firsthand how quickly serious crashes can happen. A few extra seconds of awareness can save a life.

EMS Appreciation Night at Fenway! ⚾️🚑

Last night, our team had a great time attending the Red Sox EMS Appreciation Night at Fenway Park alongside EMS professionals from across Massachusetts.

We were especially proud to see our very own Director of Clinical Services, Shaun C., honored during the pregame ceremony!

While the Red Sox came up short in a 7-6 nail biter vs. Atlanta, Paramedic Ryan M. still scored a big win by taking home Jarren Duran’s home run ball!

A great night filled with team spirit, laughs, and recognition for the hardworking EMS community!
