Arlington Commission on the Status of Women

Arlington Commission on the Status of Women The Commission advises the County on violence against women, healthcare, gender discrimination, economic opportunities, caregiving and education issues.

Abouth the Commission:
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) consists of volunteer members appointed by the Arlington County Board for three-year terms. The Commission was first established in 1974 as an advisory committee to the County Board. In 1980, the Board redesigned the committee as a permanent commission to advise the County on a variety of issues affecting women today. A Resource &

Advocate:
The Commission serves as a community resource and advocate for women seeking to continuously advance and inform women in Arlington County on legal and human rights, economic equality, equal employment, and state legislation. Since its inception, the Commission has addressed a number of needs and concerns in the community. The Commission works to maintain an active voice in state legislation by continuously expressing opinions and suggestions for the County Board on legislative bills. Past issues in legislative bills supported by the Commission include, reactivation and funding of the Virginia Commission on Women; increasing penalties of stalking with a weapon; reducing state sales tax on food; and supporting victim participation and plea agreements. An Advisor:
CSW advises other County advisory groups, as well as the community, on issues of concern to women and serves as a liaison to help the County address these issues. The Commission carries out these functions through public forums, reports to the County Board, public appearances, cooperative efforts with the County and other local women’s organizations, and developing workshops that address diverse issues of concern for the community such as, health, financial, and safety issues.
