Today, we join our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honoring the courage of the first responders who answered the call and recognizing the lasting impact of that day on survivors, families and our community.

For Sheriff José Quiroz, the anniversary is deeply personal. He joined the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office on September 10, 2001. The following morning - on just his second day - our community and country changed forever.

As we mark 25 years since the attacks, Sheriff Quiroz shared his memories with WUSA9 and reflected on the service, sacrifice and unity he witnessed in the days that followed and the toll that continues for many first responders today.

Today, the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the extraordinary courage shown by first responders, military personnel, and everyday citizens in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

As a community deeply connected to the events of that day, we reflect on the sacrifice of those who never came home, the strength of the families who continue to carry their memory, and the resilience that united our nation in the aftermath.

Twenty-five years later, we remain committed to the values that emerged from that difficult day: service, compassion, vigilance, and respect for one another. May we never forget the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the enduring spirit that continues to guide us forward.
