I haven’t used this page for a while, but town elections are upon us. This year, my friend, fellow town meeting member, and educator is running for School Committee. Shaun Berry would be an amazing value add. Her insight as both a classroom teacher and math instructional coach will be an asset as the APS continue to work to enhance the experience for all our students.

I haven’t used this page for a while, but it is super important to vote next week in Arlington’s local election. There are many contested races for town meeting, Housing Authority and School Committee.

We are in scary times for school funding. Although Massachusetts has a healthy state budget for education and much of our funding is local, we will very likely see some impact from changes at the federal level.

I am excited that we have a town member who stepped up to run in this election, and I thank Mr Vasilyev for running. Contested elections engage folks in local politics and that is incredibly important, especially now.

That said, I am supporting Kirsi Allison-Ampe and Len Kardon during this election cycle and urge you to do so as well. We need an experienced team who understands the role of local control and funding and can thoughtfully make sure our students and teachers are supported during these uncertain times.

This is the message I had published in YourArlingtom.com today:

“Thank you Arlington for this opportunity to run for elected office. I first and foremost want to thank my grassroots team. On a very small budget, you were able to help get the message out to a large number of people and I am incredibly grateful for that work. Second, I want to thank the voters who learned what my candidacy had to offer and allowed me to earn one of their votes. I really enjoyed talking to people about education and hearing how neighbors around town believe that we could work to ensure that all Arlington families have a joyful experience in the Arlington Public Schools. Finally, I am confident Arlington Public Schools are in good hands with the newly elected committee. You have elected a set of talented individuals with diverse viewpoints who all value the district’s mission and priorities. Paul, Liz, and Laura, I learned so much going through this process alongside you, and I thank you for the many thoughtful conversations we had along the way.”

I could come up with a post, but this says it well so I’ll just share. We didn’t get there but I thank those who supported me and voted for me. I enjoyed meeting people and having conversations that are important to the families in our town. I am very sure that the School Committee will keep working to ensure the Arlington public schools are a great place for ALL our children to learn and grow.

Thank you, Arlington, for your support and for the opportunity to serve on the School Committee for another three years! We have a lot to look forward to, and there is much work to be done. I am excited and energized to do that work!

Congratulations to Laura Gitelson! Welcome to the Committee. I look forward to the work we will do together.

When I began this campaign in January, I had a choice. I could spend my time figuring out campaign financing and finding a team that were not public educators to raise funds, or I could just go forward with a message and see how things turned out.

I went forward on a teacher budget, because low budget is what teachers do! 👩🏻‍🏫

While we might not have had fancy post cards or snacks, we had plenty of conversations via 40 minute free zooms, person to person discussions, and paper QR codes. The message has and will always be: “All members of the Arlington public schools should be able to experience the belonging and joy that our district embodies!”

Whatever happens, I am proud of the work I did and I enjoyed meeting neighbors. While people around Arlington are diverse in what they think about how to make public schools work, there is a clear, common value that strong public schools are an important cornerstone of our town. I hope to be able to listen to more of these voices and let them guide my work for the school committee.

Thank you to those who have voted and I truly appreciate each and every person that makes their way to the polls on Saturday and supports this endeavor!

Did you know that on this day in 1880, Louisa May Alcott was one of the first women to cast her vote in a Concord School Committee Election?

Small gains in voting rights was the suffragettes strategy to work towards an equitable election system. We are now poised to have a school committee that will have a majority of woman voices. I would be honored to be a part of this Arlington moment in history. I believe my long term work as a union leader and teacher to engage voices of those who I represent is the unique experience that I would bring to the board.

You have three votes to cast today at town hall or Saturday 8-8 at your polling local or by putting your mail in ballot in one of the 3 boxes at each end of town. Make your vote matter!

Before going to vote, make sure you know how voting in our town elections work and decide your candidates before entering the polling location.

1) Town Clerk and Board of Assessors are unopposed.

2) Selectboard: You may vote for 2 of the 3 candidates. The two candidates with the highest numbers townwide win seats.

3) School Committee: You may vote for 3 of the 4 candidates. The three candidates with the highest numbers townwide win seats.

4) Town meeting: Number of seats varies by district. You can see here, precinct 21 has 4 candidates for 4 seats. Some precincts have contested elections so look your up and see if your candidates have submitted statements
