As we near the Army’s 251st birthday and the nation’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it is a truly historic time to be an Army Soldier. Listen to Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Mullins discuss what his service means to him during this time.

Before radio technology, music was used to relay messages and issue commands. Distinct melodies and rhythmic drum beats carried information over long distances, enabling commanders to coordinate the actions of their formation.

Militia musicians brought their fifing and drumming tradition to the revolutionary cause. At Valley Forge, Baron von Steuben harnessed these techniques to evolve the Continental Army into a coordinated, professional force. Through effective communication, the Continental Army achieved results that ultimately led to victory at Yorktown and the end of the war.

The U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard join forces to portray this historic method of military communication during Twilight Tattoo!

We are always honored to visit schools around the country and share the rich history of America's military heritage through music. Through performances, demonstrations, and conversations, students learn about the role of field music from the Revolutionary War to the present, the history of the U.S. Army, and what service looks like in today's military.

Before sunrise on May 21, we joined fellow members of The United States Army Old Guard for the annual “Flags In” tradition at Arlington National Cemetery. Moving quietly through the cemetery grounds, Soldiers placed American flags at headstones ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

For generations, this tradition has honored the service and sacrifice of the men and women laid to rest at Arlington. Each flag serves as a visible reminder that their legacy and dedication to our nation will not be forgotten.
