Winston County Democratic Party Welcome to the Winston County Democratic Party!

We invite you to join as we work to serve our communities and make “The Free State of Winston” and greater Alabama an even better place to call home.

A federal court has ruled that Alabama must continue using the congressional maps used for the 2024 elections. That map gave a second majority-minority district that allowed voters to send Rep. Figures to Congress. The ruling affirms a previous finding that the Republican-drawn proposal from 2023 is deliberately racially discriminatory.

The State can appeal to SCOTUS, which could overrule today’s decision. But for today, this is a victory for fairness and voting rights.

Keep speaking up. Keep pushing back. Keep encouraging people to register and vote blue!

We are less than a week away from the Alabama Primary Election. As our state leaders try to make it harder to vote and dramatically alter the voting power of certain communities, we must forge ahead.

I know we are all tired of hearing “just go vote.” But I encourage every Democrat to get up, speak up, and show up on Election Day. If every one of us participate we can send a resounding message. We will not be silenced and we will not be deterred.

Remember the following
• Election Day is May 19th
• Know your polling location
• Take a government issued photo ID
• Polls are open 7am to 7pm
• Report any issues to proper officials
• House Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7 will hold a special election on Aug. 11 to align with recent changes to the congressional district lines.

A Statement by the Winston County Democratic Party regarding the action of the 2026 Special Legislative Session

———

The actions taken by the Alabama legislature are unconscionable and we strongly condemn this shameful effort to dilute and invalidate the voting power of our neighbors. The unimpeded and undiluted right to vote is paramount to a system of government of, for, and by the People. WE THE PEOPLE of all backgrounds, races, creeds, and faiths are stakeholders in American democracy. WE THE PEOPLE should be in charge of choosing our representatives rather than our representatives choosing who they want to serve.

Alabama was the Capital of the Confederacy and the heart of the Jim Crow South. The chains of slaves that built our state were finally broken and gave way to the birth of the Civil Rights Movement. The battle for civil and voting rights was fought right here by heroes such as Dr. King, Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Ralph Abernathy, Amelia Boynton Robinson, and Fred Shuttlesworth. Men, women, and children were beaten, bitten, bombed, and buried for the right to be equal citizens in the fulfillment of the promise of America. The Voting Rights Act helped to secure that victory, and that’s a legacy and history that we should be honoring in this state rather than attempting to dismantle. Some 60-odd years since one Alabama Governor stood in a school house door, we have yet another Governor standing in the way. What a shame that our leaders refuse to lead us forward, but rather insist on dragging us backward. But let us be clear and unwavering in our response: WE CANNOT GO BACK!

Let us persevere in hope by remembering the words of Dr. King on the steps of our state Capitol as the Selma to Montgomery March concluded: “…but all the world today knows that we are here and we are standing before the forces of power in the state of Alabama saying, "We ain't goin’ let nobody turn us around!”

Just a reminder that the 2026 Alabama Primary election will be held Tuesday, May 19th. Here’s some useful information:

DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE: MAY 4

ABSENTEE BALLOTS
• If you are applying for a MAIL IN absentee ballot, that application is due by MAY 12

• If you are applying for an IN PERSON absentee ballot, that application deadline is MAY 14

• The last day to HAND DELIVER ballots is MAY 18

• MAIL IN absentee ballots must be received by NOON on MAY 19.

Remember that Alabama DOES NOT allow crossover voting. So if you vote in one party’s primary, you CAN NOT vote in another party’s runoff. While Alabama does not currently require you to officially register with a political party, in primary elections you will be asked which party’s ballot you would like to vote on.

CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION! Alabama is one of several states that have engaged in voter roll purges. Don’t just assume that you are registered. Check and check again. Make sure all of your information is accurate and update if needed.

PHOTO ID: Alabama law requires voters to show a valid, government issued photo ID in order to vote.

More info can be found on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website at alabamavotes.gov.

BIG WIN IN TEXAS!

Taylor Rehmet wins a special election for a Texas state senate seat that hasn’t elected a Democrat in 36 years. This district was carried by Trump by 17 points in 2024, but Rehmet wins it by about 14 points.

With Republicans seeing upsets or massive underperformance in races across the country, this could be a signal for the mood of the voters for the midterms in November.
