1st Squadron, 180th Cavalry Regiment Welcome to the official 1st Squadron, 180th Cavalry Regiment page. Comments are encouraged and welcome.

The 180th Cavalry Regiment has a rich operational history reaching back to the Mexican Expedition of 1916, European Theater in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and multiple deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Deployments throughout it's early history include one the expeditions led by General Pershing to Mexican border in pursuit of Pancho Villa in 1916. In World War I, e

lements of the Oklahoma Guard, under the 36th Division from Texas, participated in the conflict. Many of the soldiers deployed were of Choctaw descent, carrying with them their heritage, traditions and language. Several of these soldiers were used as 'telephone talkers', using their native language to encrypt messages, helping to win several key battles and confusing the German enemy. These Choctaw telephone talkers were the foreshadowing of Navaho Code Talkers used in WWII.In World War II, the 180th took part in campaigns in Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, France, and Germany being deployed for 511 days of combat. Five members of the 180th became Medal of Honor recipients (2LT Ernest Childers, PFC WIlliam Johnston, PFC Salvador Lara, 1LT Jack Montgomery, and CAPT Jack Treadwell). The 180th deployed to Korea from 1951 to 1953 for 429 days, earning the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation for their valiant efforts and accomplishments. More recently, soldiers of the 180th have deployed to Egypt in support of the Multi-National Force (MFO) in (2002-2003); Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan (2006-2007); Operation Iraqi Freedom (2007-2008); and finally Operation New Dawn (2011-2012). The 180th Cavalry Regiment recently completed conducting Squad Level Gunnery during their last Annual Training (2014).

During December IDT, the Squadron convened for the Annual Cavalry Symposium. This year's keynote speaker, SFC Gerald R. Ritter of the 19th SFG, provided insightful commentary on the contemporary way of war. The troops concluded the event with a high-energy relay competition, which included building a casualty litter, pushing a HMMWV, and culminated in a Zodiac carry. Outstanding teamwork was demonstrated throughout, with Comanche Troop notably taking the top spot.
