Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary

Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary The Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary is a constructed wetland with enhancement marshes used as part of the City of Arcata's waste water treatment facility.
(976)

The 307-acre sanctuary includes freshwater marshes, brackish marshes, salt marshes, mudflats, tidal sloughs, grassy uplands, a boat ramp, an Interpretive Center, and over five miles of walking and biking paths. This innovative design has been an inspiration to other communities around the country. The 5 miles of trails are open to the public every day, sunrise to 1 hour after sunset, for walking,

jogging, biking, leashed dogs, and of course birding. The Interpretive Center is open Tuesday through Sunday 9am to 5pm and is closed on Mondays. Friends of the Arcata Marsh coordinates events & lectures at the Interpretive Center, and offers free tours every Saturday that meet at 2pm at the Interpretive Center, 569 South G Street, Arcata. Redwood Region Audubon Society leads free birding walks every Saturday at 8:30am that meet at the south end of I Street (Klopp Lake parking lot).

Purple Finch is confirmed as a breeder at the Arcata Marsh! At least three fledglings were calling right outside of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. We even got to set up the scope on one of the fledglings and many visitors got to witness some history as it happened here! This is the 57th bird species to be documented breeding at the Arcata Marsh!

Well golly…after yesterday’s exciting Mink post we’ve got another one for you! A Northwestern Pond Turtle (Actinemeys marmorata) was discovered by Joanie Weiser and later photographed by Tylor Bell-Rogers earlier today at Klopp Lake! This would be the first report of this species for the Marsh in iNaturalist!

Looking at iNaturalist the closest population of pond turtles to the Marsh are up in the Arcata Community Forest. So how did a Northwestern Pond Turtle get to the Marsh!? Hmmmmmmmm……..

An American Mink (Neogale vison) was photographed by visting birder, Susan Harmon, on 18 April. This is the first photo-documented sighting of a Mink at the Arcata Marsh. Likely this same individual was seen by Tylor Bell-Rogers on 8 April hunting in the Stanley Hariss No Name Pond! A very exciting mammal to be seen at the Arcata Marsh!!!!!
