The Redwood Interfaith Gospel Choir formed in 1992 because of what happened to Rodney King:

Rodney King was born in 1965. In 1991, King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers in an incident captured on video and broadcast across the country. The footage exposed the reality of police violence to a national audience.

When the officers were acquitted, it sparked widespread protests and uprisings in Los Angeles. King’s experience forced a national reckoning on policing and accountability that continues today.

His story remains a reminder of the urgent need for justice and reform.

Madi Simmons sang with us last Spring’s concert as our special guest soloist. He brought such love to our rehearsals and taught us an old gospel song from his childhood. Bless his family as they mourn his passing and celebrate his life ling music ministry.

We are deeply saddened today by the passing of local and global reggae icon— as well as all around incredible human— Madi Simmons ❤️‍🩹 Madi was a huge supporter of Humboldt Hot Air, and would congratulate me (Neroli) on the stations progress every time I saw him. Anyone that knows Madi knows he radiated a light to everyone that was nothing but sincere love and care. RIP Madi, our community, & the world, won’t be the same without you 💌
