January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Human trafficking isn’t something that only happens in big cities or far-off places. It happens in small towns. It happens quietly. And it often hides in plain sight.
Trafficking is not just kidnapping. It can look like manipulation, control, coercion, threats, isolation, or someone being forced to work or engage in acts against their will. Vulnerable populations — including youth, those struggling financially, and individuals seeking connection — are often the most targeted.
Warning signs to watch for:
• Someone who seems fearful, withdrawn, or controlled by another person
• A person who cannot speak for themselves or is coached on what to say
• Lack of control over personal ID, phone, or money
• Signs of abuse, malnutrition, exhaustion, or neglect
• Sudden changes in behavior or unexplained possessions
If you suspect human trafficking:
📞 Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline: 1-888-373-7888
📱 Or text HELP to 233733 (BEFREE)
🚔 In an emergency, call 911
🏛️ You can also contact the Arcanum Police Department directly (937-692-8500) to report concerns or ask questions.
Prevention starts with awareness. Protection starts with community. And accountability starts with courage.
If you ever see something that doesn’t feel right — trust your instincts and speak up.
