Congratulations to Steven and Brian Keefe who completed their Master Hiker designation at False Cape State Park

Here is what was said about their journey from Chief Ranger of Visitor Experiences, Diego Rosario:

“Steven and Brian Keefe are a father-and-son hiking duo who have been dedicating their time to earning the Master Hiker Award. After a little more than a year, they visited all the required Virginia State Parks to achieve it. Steven and Brian said their favorite parks were Holliday Lake State Park and Staunton River State Park, though they told us that False Cape was one of their most memorable experiences.”

From Steven Keefe:

“First of all, shoutout to Diego and all the rangers at False Cape. Diego was awesome in his responsiveness and showed a genuine love for Virginia’s parks. The rangers we encountered throughout our Trail Quest were top-notch and represented the park system incredibly well.
In part because of our experience with Trail Quest, we are in the process of starting a nonprofit to raise money for hiking-related trail maintenance and other causes at a national level. Thank you for having this program in place — we appreciate everything you do to make it fun.”

Thank you for sharing your journey and for being part of the Trail Quest and Virginia State Park family!

Let's make a difference together by participating in Clean the Bay Day! We are nestled within the stunning Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Join us as we come together to protect and preserve the beauty of our beloved lake and the surrounding environment. 🌊

🗓️ May 2
🕘 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

To support our volunteers, we're offering free parking passes and clean-up supplies. Simply visit a ranger at the Office or the Boathouse to sign in and collect your supplies and parking pass. Take a stroll along the shoreline and lend a helping hand by picking up litter, bring your own water vessel and assist in cleaning up the lake from the water itself, or meet at the Boathouse to borrow one of our boats (boats are limited).

Participants may walk up to either clean-up site without registering, but registration is preferred to help us ensure we have enough supplies for everyone. Please visit The Chesapeake Bay Foundation website to register at Holliday Lake State Park.

After a cozy winter brumation, Hisstopher the corn snake has officially moved into his deluxe new digs. His upgraded 100-gallon terrarium features and open concept layout, high ceilings, a custom rock wall, and of course prime views of the park office.

At 12 years old, Hisstopher is still growing, and with the right conditions could reach up to 6 feet in length. Rangers noticed him becoming more active (and shedding more), so it was time for an upgrade to give him space to stretch, climb and explore in comfort.

With the help of a dedicated volunteer, the new habitat was built using materials collected right from the park including branches, pinecones, leaves, and more all secured with animal safe adhesive. Multiple levels were carved from foam and coated with grout to create a rough, rock-like texture. The floor is soft peat moss, complete with a cozy hideaway for privacy.

Enrichment is super important for animals in captivity, and this new setup will allow Hisstopher to climb, burrow, and investigate to his hearts content. For now, he's soaking up the warmth of his heat lamp and probably counting down the days until his first meal since fall!

Come meet Hisstopher and check out his new home during Reptile Rangers throughout April.
