Around 5:00 a.m. today, the Apex Fire Department was alerted to a fire at an automotive shop by a passerby. Crews arrived to find the building heavily involved in fire. Units from Apex, Cary, and Morrisville worked together for about an hour to bring the fire under control, demonstrating the strength of our regional partnership (CAM).

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Several vehicles sustained damage, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

This type of response can involve more than putting out the flames. Once the fire was under control, Apex’s Building Inspections Department stepped in to assess the condition of the structure and determine whether it was safe to reenter. It’s one of the important roles our Building Inspections team plays in keeping people safe after an emergency.

Apex fire units responding included Ladder 34, Battalion 5 and 6, Fire Marshal 34, Engine 31, Engine 34 and Engine 35.

The scene is now clear. We appreciate the quick response and teamwork of all the agencies and Town staff involved.

UPDATE: Roadway is clear. Thanks for your patience!!

Fire and Law Enforcement are on scene for a gas leak in the area of Old Raleigh Road and Lake Pine Drive.
Please avoid this area, if you can, so everyone can work safely and diligently to make the appropriate repairs.
Roads closed include Lake Pine/Old Raleigh, Lake Pine and US 64 as well as Old Raleigh and Sterling Silver.

⚠️ UNDERSTAND THE RISK ⚠️

On Saturday morning, Apex Police and Apex Fire responded to a serious collision involving an electric bike and a vehicle on East Williams Street. The rider suffered significant injuries.

Electric bikes are increasingly common, but not every electric two-wheeled vehicle is legally considered an e-bike. Depending on its speed, power and design, it may be classified as a moped or motorcycle, with different laws, licensing and safety requirements.

No matter the classification, riders have far less protection than someone inside a vehicle. Even at lower speeds, a collision can cause severe or deadly injuries.

Before you ride:

👉 Know how your vehicle is classified and understand the laws that apply.
👉 Wear a properly fitted helmet and securely fasten the chin strap every time.
👉 Follow traffic laws and use extra caution when entering or crossing a roadway.
👉 Ride as though drivers may not see you.

Drivers should also remain alert, slow down and watch carefully for riders.

Knowing what you’re riding is the first step. Understanding the risk, and riding accordingly, can save your life.

UPDATE (9:00 AM): The gas leak has been contained. Enbridge crews will remain on scene for the next few hours while repairs are made to the line.

Gas service to the surrounding neighborhood has been temporarily shut off while this work is completed.

The Apex Fire Department is currently on scene of a reported gas leak. Enbridge Gas is en route to assist with the investigation.

At this time, there is no threat to the public, and all major roads remain open.

The intersections of N. Hughes Street at Culvert Street and N. Elm Street at Culvert Street are currently closed while crews work in the area. Please avoid the area and use an alternate route until the roadways reopen.

For the first time in our history, the Apex Fire Department has achieved Accredited Agency status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI)!

This recognition is the result of a journey that began in 2018 and years of hard work, comprehensive self-assessment and a commitment to continually improving how we serve Apex.

But what does accreditation mean for our residents?

It means your fire department has undergone an extensive, independent review of how we operate, respond to emergencies, plan for the future and serve our community. It means we are measuring our performance against internationally recognized standards, identifying what we do well and, just as importantly, where we can continue to improve.

For our residents, it means having a fire department committed to providing the highest level of service today while preparing for the needs of a growing Apex tomorrow.

Apex Fire is now among more than 300 internationally accredited agencies through CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence. We are also part of an even more exclusive group: fewer than 130 fire departments worldwide hold both CFAI accreditation and a Class 1 ISO rating.

That is something our entire community can be proud of. ❤️
