*preliminary only - we will update as more is officially released* ... On Sunday, January 19, 2020, 0930hrs(local), Honolulu Police were called to respond to an assault at a home at 3015 Hibiscus Drive near the base of Diamond Head near Kapiolani Park.
A man was being evicted this morning from a home that was not leased to him and then stabbed the landlady and another woman, stabbing them with a three-pronged garden tool.
Three officers arrived and were walking down the home’s driveway when the suspect opened fire from the garage of the home. Officer Enriquez was struck by gunfire. Two other officers were forced to take cover.
The suspect then barricaded inside the home.
As more officers arrived to assist, the suspect fired at the second group of officers and fatally struck officer Kalama
A home that the suspected gunman, age 69, was believed to be inside caught fire and was quickly engulfed by flames. It is not yet confirmed whether the suspect has been killed in the fire. The suspect and two female civilians are unaccounted for as of yet. We will update once directly confirmed by agency.
As the houses are burning, live ammunition was exploding from the suspect's home. This hindered access for the Firefighters. The fire spread to several neighboring homes as well as well as a Police vehicle. Multiple homes have been destroyed by the fires.
The flames have now been extinguished as Firefighters continue to tamp down any remaining flare-ups.
Officers Kalama and Enriquez were transported to Queen’s Medical Center. Sadly, both Officers succumbed to their gunshot wounds and were pronounced shortly after arrival.
We will also update on the stabbing victim, Lois Cain, who remains critical after being stabbed in the leg. Our prayers are with her and her family.
Tiffany was a seven year veteran to the HPD and leaves behind her beloved husband John who is also an HPD Officer, three daughters, and ‘ohana.
Kekaulike was a nine year veteran to HPD and leaves behind children and ‘ohana (we are still working on additional bio info for both and will update)
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the ‘ohana, both of blood and of Blue, to all on scene, including our Firefighters and medics, and who assisted, to the neighbors and community. -from all of us at True Blue Warriors
