May is National Egg month. National Egg Month has been observed since the 1960s, but the months varied over the years. In the 1990s, the American Egg Board re-established National Egg Month in May.

Thank you to all the Egg-celent U.S. farmers and producers who are dedicated to providing Americans with this essential food! 🥚🐣

One of the world's most affordable food sources, eggs contain all the nutrients a body needs except vitamin C. So if you're on a budget and want to stay healthy, add eggs to your superfood list. 🍳

May is National Strawberry Month, celebrating the peak season for these berries with high nutrition content, including a full day's value of vitamin C in one serving. They are a heart-healthy fruit, rich in fiber and antioxidants.

🍓A “Berry” Interesting Fact:

These sweet red fruits with seeds on their surface aren't even really berries. Strawberries belong to the rose family and reproduce from runners, not seeds. There are over 400 different varieties, and each "berry" produces approximately 200 seeds on the outside of the fruit.

Every year on May 22nd, the International Day for Biological Diversity seeks to increase awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues.

The UN General Assembly created the International Day for Biological Diversity in 1993. The original date was December 29th. Due to the busy holiday season, many countries could not focus their time and energy on planning events for this day. In 2000, the UN General Assembly changed the date to May 22nd.

The health of the earth suffers when biodiversity decreases. Biodiversity is very important for many reasons. It supplies the earth with clean water and oxygen. Biodiversity also enables plants to grow, which produces food for humans and animals. Other benefits of biodiversity is that it keeps pests and diseases in check and protects against flooding.

Another Great Food and Farm Tour!

We turned our dedication to natural resource conservation into an unforgettable adventure, diving into the heart of our community’s agriculture! 💚
From farm to table, we explored area farms where we met passionate conservationists, and landowners who pour their hearts into their farm, and tasted some of the freshest ingredients that our community has to offer. 🫐🍓🧇

Highlights of the day included:
Breakfast at Hall Farms with demonstrations of feral swine traps, presentations on Regenerative Ag, Soil Health, and highlights of Envirothon students and the Calhoun County Career Academy.
The tour included stops at Greenway Plants, Hammond's Creek Bend Farm, Aquality Farms, and concluded with a wonderful lunch at Garfrerick’s Café. 🍽 🍷

The best part? We learned a lot --- but also connected with fellow landowners and conservationists and shared experiences, stories, and recipes. It’s amazing how food, fun, and fellowship bring us together, bridging cultures and creating lasting friendships.
Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Let’s keep the spirit of local agriculture alive and continue supporting our farmers. Until next time, let’s keep exploring the beauty and bounty of our community!
