πŸ“’ Understanding Millage Rates in Calhoun County πŸ“’

We often receive questions about millage rates and where property tax dollars go. Here's a quick explanation:

πŸ’‘ What is a mill?
One mill equals 1/10 of 1 cent, or $1 in tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

Property taxes collected in Calhoun County help fund essential services throughout our communities, including:

🏫 Local Schools and Education
πŸš’ Fire Departments and Emergency Services
πŸ›οΈ Cities and Municipalities
πŸ›£οΈ County Roads and Infrastructure

The total millage rate varies depending on where your property is located:

πŸ“ Anniston – 51.5 Mills
πŸ“ Oxford – 47.5 Mills
πŸ“ Jacksonville – 47.5 Mills
πŸ“ Piedmont – 45.0 Mills
πŸ“ Hobson City – 45.0 Mills
πŸ“ Weaver – 45.0 Mills
πŸ“ Ohatchee – 44.0 Mills
πŸ“ Southside – 44.0 Mills
πŸ“ Glencoe – 44.0 Mills
πŸ“ District 1 (County North) – 39.0 Mills
πŸ“ District 2 (County South) – 40.0 Mills

A significant portion of your property tax dollars supports our local school systems, while additional funding helps provide fire protection, municipal services, county operations, roads, and bridges.

Understanding where these funds go helps explain why tax rates differ from one area of the county to another. If you have questions about your property's tax district or millage rate, our office is happy to help.

πŸ“’ Property Tax Redemption Information πŸ“’

Property taxes are due each year beginning October 1 and may be paid without penalty through December 31. Taxes become delinquent on January 1, and unpaid taxes are assessed additional fees and 1% interest per month.

Properties with unpaid taxes are sold at the annual Tax Lien Auction held in May.

If your property has been sold for taxes, the property owner may redeem it by paying all taxes, fees, penalties, and interest due. Certified funds are required for all redemptions.

βœ… Accepted payment methods:
β€’ Cash (in office only)
β€’ Cashier's Check
β€’ Money Order

⚠️ Personal checks and credit/debit cards cannot be accepted for redemptions. No redemptions past 3:30 PM

If you purchased property during the year, please verify that property taxes have been paid, as tax bills are often issued in the previous owner's name.

For redemption information or questions about delinquent taxes, please contact the Collection Department 256-241-2840.
