Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks visited Bear Branch Malt in Carroll County last week to speak with owner and operator, Brad Humbert about Maryland craft malts.

Malts are one of four main ingredients in the making of beer (water, malt, hops and yeast) and are created from barley, rye and oats.

Malts actually add most of the flavor and color in the beer and hops can add to the flavor. To understand the flavors of malts, Brads set up a “hot steep” so we could see and taste the differences between types of malts.

There are only two malting houses in Maryland currently. It takes a lot of work and passion (and capital!) but it leads to a delicious all local product that’s truly Maryland grain to glass.

Brad grows some of the wheat and rye he uses but also works with other farmers to turn their raw product into malts that breweries around the state can use. Next time you have a Maryland beer ask if they’re craft malts!

You can also celebrate by attending one of the Bear Branch events. Cheers!

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the lives lost, support their families, and remember the bravery of our first responders. Today and every day, Maryland remembers.

25 years ago, our world changed forever. The terrorist attacks that day took nearly 3,000 lives, including the lives of 68 Marylanders.

Today we honor those we lost, their families, and the brave first responders who risked their safety to save others. We must never and will never forget.
