Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus

Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus Leading the advocacy for Latino and immigrant communities in the Maryland General Assembly

Priorities for the MLLC include, among others: promoting greater educational achievement and equity in our schools, especially for English Language Learners; ensuring more high-quality jobs and fair wages; reducing health disparities; protecting civil and immigrant rights; and promoting stronger Latino communities through safety and security. Collectively, the MLLC represents decades of experience

in elected office and public service. The members currently serve on major legislative committees, including the House Appropriations; Environmental Matters and Transportation; Health and Government Operations, and both the House Judiciary and Senate Judicial Proceedings committees. Their academic and professional backgrounds span a wide spectrum of study and work experiences in the private and public sectors. This diverse, multinational group of Latino legislators has ethnic, cultural, and family roots in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, and Puerto Rico. They represent constituents living in Anne Arundel, Montgomery, and Prince George’s Counties; thus representing more than two-thirds of Maryland’s fast growing Latino population.

Maryland’s Latino and immigrant population growth has helped counterbalance population declines across the state. Yet our community remains underserved in the systems that matter most. This week’s roundtable with the Prince George’s County Executive was a key opportunity to change that.

The Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus is committed to turning dialogue into legislation that reflects who Maryland is and most importantly, who we’re becoming.

Last week we had our annual Latinx Youth Day event! Student participants had the opportunity to sit in on the House floor, tour the state house, shadow legislators, and participate in a mock legislative debate. It was incredible seeing a new generation of Latino leaders participate in this event!
