FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!

Labor Day is one of the last big grilling weekends of summer which means it's also a good time for a quick grill safety check!

🥩 Grill: Keep it outside and away from structures.
👀 Watch: Never leave it unattended.
🧯 Prepare: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
💧 Remember: NEVER use water on a grease fire.
🏠 Before you leave: Make sure the grill is completely cool.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!

🚲 BICYCLE SAFETY🚲

“See & Be Seen”
As summer days get shorter:
* Wear bright or reflective clothing
* Use a white front light and red rear light when riding at night
* Add reflectors to the bike
* Don't assume drivers can see you

“Helmet Check!”
A helmet only works if it fits properly:
* Sits level on the head
* Covers the forehead
* Straps form a “V” around the ears
* Buckle is snug under the chin
* Replace helmets after a serious crash

“Stop. Look. Listen.”
A simple safety reminder:
* Stop at intersections
* Look left, right, then left again
* Listen for approaching vehicles
* Make eye contact with drivers when possible

“Backpack + Bike = Extra Caution”
With school starting:
* Make sure backpacks are secure.
* Keep straps away from wheels and chains.
* Don't overload the backpack.
* Keep both hands available to control the bike.

Whether you're riding to school, around the neighborhood, or just squeezing in one more summer ride, a few extra seconds of caution can make the difference between a great ride and a trip to the hospital. 🚒

Did you know school is starting for most Anne Arundel county students next week? This means more traffic, busses, bikes and pedestrians during your commute. Here are some driver safety tips to make sure everyone gets to and from school safely

🚗Reduce your speed, pay attention, and obey traffic laws in school zones and neighborhoods surrounding schools
🛑 Be ready to stop at all times
🚲Children on bikes are often unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least 3 feet of passing distance between the bicycle and your vehicle
👀Try to make eye contact with children who are waiting to cross the road
✅Wait patiently for children to complete their crossing before you proceed
👧🧒Do not load and unload children into vehicles across the street from the school
🦺Don’t double park in the school zone – this blocks visibility for other children and vehicles
❌Never pass a vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians
🚸 Do not block crosswalks. This forces pedestrians to go around you and puts them in the path of moving traffic
🚌 Watch for children arriving late for the bus – they may dart across the street without heeding traffic

FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!

It's time to think about heading back to school and we want you to stay fire safe when doing so.

Lithium-ion battery fires (from e-bikes, e-scooters, and chargers left in
backpacks or dorm rooms) have become one of the fastest-growing fire risks tied to back-to-school season. They can ignite with little warning.

Safety Tips:
* Charge e-bikes/scooters/laptops away from beds and exits, never overnight
unattended.
* Use only the charger that came with the device. Mismatched chargers are a top
cause of battery fires.
* Don't charge phones or devices under your pillow, on your bed, or on the couch.
* Practice your family's or dorm's fire escape plan. Know two ways out of every
room.
* Make sure smoke alarms are working in bedrooms and hallways before the school
year starts.

🚒 Fun Fact Friday

Did you know? The sun can actually start a fire.

A curved piece of glass like a decorative crystal, glass ornament, or even a water-filled vase can focus sunlight into a concentrated beam, just like a magnifying glass. Under the right conditions, that concentrated heat can ignite nearby materials.

Summer tip: Keep reflective glass items away from windows where direct sunlight shines for long periods.

Did you know? During a busy summer fire, a firefighter can lose up to 2 liters (over half a gallon) of sweat in an hour while wearing full turnout gear.

That's why hydration starts before the emergency and continues long after the fire is out. Here's your reminder to stay hydrated just like your heroes

Quick question: How old are your smoke alarms 🤔?

If you don't know, take a look today! Every smoke alarm has a manufacture date on the back. If it's 10 years old or older, it's time to replace it - even if it still beeps during a test.

This weekend is National Parents' Day, so make it a quick family safety activity:
✅ Press the TEST button on every smoke alarm in your home.
✅ Check the manufacture date on the back of each alarm.
✅ Replace any smoke alarm that is 10 years old or older.

🚒 A two-minute check today can help protect your family tomorrow.

Did you know July is National Grilling Month 🍔🌭

Its also one of the busiest months for grill fires. Every year, grills cause thousands of home fires across the U.S.

Here are some tips to keep the summer fun going without a visit from your local fire department
🔥 Keep your grill at least 10 feet from your home, deck rails, and anything that can burn.
🔥 Never grill in a garage, under a covered porch, or inside a tent.
🔥 Check propane hoses and connections with a soapy water leak test before lighting.
🔥 Keep a fire extinguisher or a box of baking soda nearby. Never use water on a grease fire.
🔥 Clean grease and fat buildup regularly. It's one of the leading causes of grill fires.

⚡ Fun Fact Friday: Lightning Edition! ⚡

We have had some big storms lately, and we are sure you have seen some lightning, but did you know?

🌩️ Lightning is about 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun reaching nearly 50,000°F.
⚡ A single lightning bolt can travel up to 100 miles and strike 10–15 miles away from a storm.
⛈️ If you hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck.

When thunder roars, go indoors! No place outside is safe during a thunderstorm. Wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before heading back outside.
