Maryland State Education Association MSEA represents 76,000 educators across Maryland working to support our students everyday. This is a community for educators and public education supporters.

We are PUSHING BACK on efforts to ban books in Somerset County.

The board of education is trying to bar students under 18 from accessing books classified as young adult—books like Harry Potter, The Diary of Anne Frank, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

The board’s policy violates Maryland’s Freedom to Read Act, which prevents extremist censorship efforts like this.

Along with the ACLU of Maryland, the Somerset Education Association, Maryland Association of School Librarians, and the parent of students in Somerset County, today we filed an appeal with the State Board of Education asking them to stop this policy from taking effect—and we will keep fighting for students’ right to have access to a wide range of age-appropriate books.
