EDC Explains: What Is a Retail Gap?

Have you ever driven to another community to shop, eat, or access a service that isn't available in Anna?

That's what economic developers call a retail gap.

A retail gap occurs when residents spend money outside their community because a particular business, restaurant, store, or service isn't currently available locally.

Example: If you drive to another city to buy furniture, dine at a restaurant, or access a service unavailable in Anna, that spending supports the community where the purchase occurs. Those dollars can help fund public services, infrastructure, parks, and other community investments. That's why attracting businesses that residents already use is important.
