“Dear members of the Ann Arbor Community,
It is election season and this year’s midterms are more important than ever. Public education hangs in the balance both on the state level and local level. We need Gretchen Whitmer and a Democratic legislature if we hope to solve the ongoing problem of school funding. We also need a strong school board if we hope to push back against the DeVos agenda which we have been dealing with for quite some time. We endorse incumbent Jessica Kelly, as well as Bryan Johnson, Rebecca Lazarus, and Lucas Cole.
Here are some of the compelling reasons the AAEA endorsed Johnson, Lazarus, and Cole:
Bryan Johnson will be a strong voice to balance some of the antiÂ-teacher attitudes currently on the board. Bryan is a staunch advocate of teachers, not because his wife is a teacher, but because he values their contributions to our district and believes preserving a trusting relationship with teachers is critical to helping students achieve.
Rebecca Lazarus understands that children are often underserved based on their family income, race, or ability. She will be a champion for all children to have a highÂ-quality education and will fight to ensure we have a district that delivers on this promise bringing out the very best in every child.
Lucas Cole will give the student body a voice in the policy that directly influences their daily lives. He served on the Ann Arbor Public Schools District’s Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee, where he worked with the school board to shape the district’s reproductive health curriculum. He plans to create advisory seats on the board for each high school so that student concerns are provided to the Board in an ongoing format.
We believe that together these three can help make the Board more progressive and responsive to the needs of our students, families, teachers, and principals. They want to be part of creating a Board that is informed, principled, independent, and transparent.
We hope you will join us by sharing information with your friends and family and planting a yard sign to encourage your neighbors to vote as well.
Sincerely,
AAEAÂ PAC, representing teachers, office professionals, paraprofessionals, AADL librarians, and staff
