Today’s ruling is a victory for the people of western Wayne County and the health of our communities. I could not be more proud of our efforts that made it possible.
From the beginning, we stood united in saying that our neighborhoods should not be treated as a dumping ground for radioactive waste. Residents, local leaders, and advocates raised their voices together, and this decision shows what is possible when a community stands together and refuses to back down.
I’ve been proud to stand alongside this community throughout this fight, and I will keep fighting to ensure Michiganders are protected from dangerous contamination and environmental harm.
The waste is part of the federal Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, or FUSRAP, which oversees cleanup of contaminated sites connected to early atomic weapons development during World War II.
