USDA is making $1.5 billion available in the 2024 fiscal year for conservation and climate activities through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP), a voluntary approach that utilizes public-private partnerships.

Project proposals are being accepted through July 2, aiming to help farmers and forest owners adopt and expand conservation strategies to enhance natural resources.

“These projects in turn can save farmers money, create new revenue streams, and increase productivity,” USDA wrote.

"Washtenaw has added small family farms, and those are the kind of farms that create the long-term sustainable food economy we want to see, that make a healthy and wealthy community and make Michigan a great place to live."

A decline in food-producing farms has continued in Michigan for many years since the '50s, but the trend reversed in Washtenaw County starting around 2012.
