Last week, SMAFC board members joined board members from the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs -MAFC and the other Michigan Fire Chief Regions at the Congressional Fire Services Institute in Washington DC. Over the course of 3 days our chiefs met with numerous members of Congress, advocating for support of issues important to the Michigan fire service including: the continued funding of AFG and SAFER grants, lithium ion battery standards, EMS funding and the National Fire Fighter Cancer Registry.

The fire service’s supporters in the U.S. House of Representatives continue to strive to save the AFG and SAFER grant programs. The programs are scheduled for termination on September 30. Representatives Michael Bost (R-IL) and Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) have drafted a letter asking House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and the Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to add the Fire Grants and Safety Act to the annual appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is important to get as many Representatives as we can to sign this letter to show that Congress does not want to kill the AFG and SAFER program. Please contact your Representatives and tell them to sign the Bost-Pascrell “Dear Colleague” letter to save the AFG and SAFER programs.

The AFG and SAFER programs are set to expire on September 30, 2024. All the national fire organizations have been working to enact the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S.870/H.R. 4090) which would reauthorize both grant programs, but your help is needed! Please visit CFSI at https://loom.ly/8nlR9FM for information on how you can help.

Congress established the AFG grant program in 2000. For over 20 years, the program has served as a vital source of funding for many career, combination, and volunteer departments that continue to do more with less. With these grants, departments can purchase equipment, training, and other department...
