The following information needs to be of public information. On Dec 1,2023, the Angus VFD WILL continue to respond to calls within our incorporated area. A call for service beyond our city limits may not be answered. We regret this and hope the county responds to resolve this. The commissioners and judge have known this for many months and have not acted to resolve it timely. The county has chosen to not compensate us. As stated in the following letter, we have asked to have a month to month continuation of the current contract until the new contract has been completed but that hasn’t happened. No department in the county has been under contract since Sept 30th and no money has been paid for services rendered. Below is a letter which was presented to our Navarro County Judge and Commissioners. Please, please reach out to your county commissioner and judge and let them know your thoughts.
To Navarro County Commissioners Court
The Navarro County Volunteer Firefighters Association called for a Chief’s Meeting on Thursday timely, November 16, 2023 where we discussed the contract that has lapsed since October 1, 2023. We understand changes are being made to a new contract due to liability. We would like to request the contract that expired, be extended to January 1, 2024, until the new contract can be completed and agreed-upon. We do not want to put the citizens that we are here to protect in danger of not having fire protection. We ask that the monthly subsidiary be reinstated to continue with the contract as well. Every department in the county depends on this money to assist with paying bills and fueling trucks every month. This is taxpayer money that has already been allocated to the fire departments. We all understand the liability, and we feel that there’s too much of a liability for us to respond to calls without a contract. We are trying to protect ourselves from a potential lawsuit as well. If we do not have a contract by November 30, 2023 at midnight there may be an interruption to service provided to Navarro County citizens. I am sure this is a liability in itself that Navarro County Commissioners Court does not want to assume the responsibility for.
