Mounds State Park

Mounds State Park This is an official page of Mounds State Park. The largest earthwork, the Great Mound, is believed to have been constructed around 160 B.C.

Mounds State Park, located off I-69 east of Anderson, features 10 unique earthworks built by prehistoric Native Americans known as the Adena-Hopewell people. Archaeological surveys indicate the mounds were used as gathering places for religious ceremonies, from where astronomical alignments could be viewed. The park features a Nature Center, hiking trails, camping, and a canoe launch. Please revie

"Hey - I'm walkin' here!"

Have you seen these turtles walking around the park, your yard, or even trying to cross the road? The eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina) are a colorful species of turtle found throughout Indiana. Their uniquely patterned, hinge-style shells can range in color from yellows, to oranges, and to reds on backgrounds of brown, black, or gray. They can live to over 100 years old (although living into their 60's is more common), and enjoy munching on almost anything they can find including berries, slugs, deceased animals, and even mushrooms that are poisonous to humans.

If you happen to spot one in Mounds, please let us know! We love hearing about eastern box turtle sightings 😁

🐢Eastern box turtle fun fact🐢: You can tell if an eastern box turtle is male or female by looking at their eyes! Males typically have red or orange eyes while females typically have dark colored eyes.
