Madison County's Ed Castor was named the ninth Point of Light by President Bush. At that time, Ed was a factory worker who had gone from being a non-reading adult to the leader of a national literacy initiative, based on his great desire to change his own life by learning to read. With the help of his tutor, Madison County Literacy Coalition volunteer Sue Carter, he overcame the learning differences that had kept him from learning to read in a traditional classroom setting. We celebrate Ed, and the other Points of Light recipients, who have worked selflessly to make a difference in the lives of others.

Madison County and Anderson, Indiana was represented when President Bush named our adult literacy learner Ed Castor as his ninth Point of Light. Ed has spent the last three decades telling his story. His message is a powerful one - learning to read changed his life. Madison County Literacy Coalition is still helping adults change their lives. For more information on how to become a tutor or how to get help for a friend, call The Literacy Center at 641-0117,

In his 1989 “thousand points of light” speech, President George H.W. Bush renewed the spirit of volunteerism and galvanized the modern national service movement. Today, we come together with volunteers across the country to send President Bush a “thousand points of thanks,” and share stories that show impact of service and volunteerism on our lives, and on our families, neighborhoods, towns, cities, nation and world. Please join us, along with America's Promise Alliance, America's Service Commissions, Service Year and Voices for National Service – what’s your story?

"Literacy is critical to the health of our nation and essential to the democratic process. Every citizen has the right and obligation to make informed choices.
That involves understanding the issues, evaluating the candidates, analyzing their positions, and marking ballots correctly."
- Sen. Jerry Hill

As you exercise your right to vote on Election Day, try to imagine how overwhelming this basic foundation of American democracy can be for Individuals who struggle with reading. One in five adults are faced with difficult or impossible challenges as they identify their polling place, register to vote, research the issues and candidates, read the signs and directions at their polling place, and navigate the ballot form.
