In accordance with Alabama law, qualifying for Democratic candidates opened today, January 5, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23. If you live in Covington County, Alabama, and want to run for the Democratic nomination for sheriff, revenue commissioner, or Place 5 member (Florala area) on the Covington County Board of Education, please contact me, the chair of the county party, at [email protected]. I will send you the Declaration of Candidacy Form and the checklist of other requirements for qualifying. Candidates for these paid positions are asked to pay a qualifying fee to the county party of 1% of the annual salary of the position. Candidates for the County Democratic Executive Committee, the governing body of the county party, should file a Declaration of Candidacy form with me and pay a $25 qualifying fee to the county party, which will also serve as their 2026 membership dues. We need people to run for the county executive committee from each of the four county commission districts. According to the bylaws of the State Democratic Executive Committee, we will have a full popularly elected committee when we have four men and four women from each of the commission districts, or, in other words, thirty-two people. If you want to run for state office, such as state representative for House District 92 or state senator for Senate District 31, you will file with the state party. You can do that online at www.aldemocrats.org or by mailing or delivering in person the Declaration of Candidacy form and the qualifying fee to party headquarters in Montgomery. Again, I can supply the Declaration of Candidacy form. The qualifying fee for state positions is 2% of the annual salary of that position. If you want to run to represent our state house district, District 92, on the State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC), the governing body of the Alabama Democratic Party, you also file the Declaration of Candidacy form with the state party; each state house district should be represented by a man and a woman. The qualifying fee to run for the SDEC, an unpaid position, is $50. Please consider running for something! As Republicans continue their misrule at the state, as well as federal, level, opportunities are growing for Democrats even in currently red Covington County.
Alabama Democrats believe in equality for all, the power of education, the dignity of work & our responsibility to each other.
