Hunger is an issue all over the US, but especially in Alaska, where we have the additional challenges of severe weather, icy roads, and rural communities that don’t always have easy access to each other. That’s why we’re so grateful to our fellow partners, non-profits, and community members who make an impact on hunger all over the state, to make sure that everyone has access to the help they need.

Last year, our donors and volunteers provided emergency food support for more than 13,000 people through the St. Francis House Food Pantry, helping to ensure that our neighbors had adequate nutrition to live healthy, successful lives.

When you provide food for our fellow community members, you support more than just nutrition–you provide peace of mind, good physical health, and enable them to focus less on where the next meal will come from so they can focus instead on creating long-term stability for themselves and their families.

Did you know that 1 in 7 Alaskans experience food insecurity? That means more than 100,000 people in our state have difficulty either affording or accessing the basic nutrition they need on a regular basis. That makes community supports like St. Francis House Food Pantry, the Food Bank of Alaska, and the tremendous corp of volunteers and community members who make them possible even more essential, ensuring that support is there when our neighbors need it.

Hunger Action Month is coming up soon, and that's got us reflecting on the thousands of people that help us fight hunger in Anchorage each year. Just one example: every day at Brother Francis Shelter, guests are provided packed lunches to keep them going as they work on establishing permanent stability. And each of those lunches is packed by our excellent volunteer meals teams from groups like Joy Lutheran Church, IDEA Homeschool, Frontier Charter School, East High School, Eagle River Valley Ward, Chugiak High School, and many more!

Thank you to everyone who helps us feed our community and support our neighbors through hard times! And a special thank you to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for donating funding for the lunch bags and organizing the delivery!

One of the most important human needs is simply to be heard, to know that someone cares about what you have to say and wants to know what’s on your mind. This not only helps us think through some of our feelings, it affirms to us that we belong and are a valued part of our community.

That’s why we’re extremely grateful to our Listening Post volunteers, who make dedicated time to just sit and listen to the guests at our shelters and at locations all over Anchorage. By sitting and sharing time with others without offering advice or trying to fix problems, they provide a great service to our community members who need it, treating them with dignity and respect and helping them to know they are valued.

FashionPact has been a terrific supporter of Catholic Social Services and other nonprofits in Alaska since they launched in 2021! When you shop for quality second-hand goods at FashionPact, a portion of the proceeds goes to a non-profit of your choice, including CSS. A huge thank you to FashionPact for their partnership over the years and for highlighting us this month, and thank you to all of the FashionPact customers who designate their proceeds to Catholic Social Services where it can provide food, shelter, and hope for the future to our neighbors in need.

Thank you to the great group from Shallowford Presbyterian Church for all their help at Grow North Farm in June! Their youth group came all the way from Atlanta, GA to help out our community, and they did a terrific job rolling up their sleeves and helping us get everything ready for the market season.
