Stop by 4th Avenue and D St. and visit with local mushing historian Rod Perry as he shares fascinating stories about Alaska’s dog mushing heritage the Iditarod, and the incredible sled dogs that help shape our state’s history.

And he’s not alone - his four legged friend, Strider, is joining in on the fun!

🐾 Trail Tales Thursday 🐾

Long before airplanes, highways, and modern delivery services, Alaska's sled dogs were the lifeline connecting remote communities across the territory.

During the Gold Rush era, dog teams hauled supplies, mail, and passengers across hundreds of miles of rugged wilderness. In winter, when rivers froze and trails disappeared beneath snow, sled dogs kept Alaska moving.

Perhaps the most famous chapter in Alaska's mushing history came in 1925 during the "Great Race of Mercy," when relay teams of mushers and sled dogs transported life-saving diphtheria serum nearly 700 miles to Nome, helping stop a deadly outbreak. Their courage and endurance became a symbol of Alaska's pioneering spirit.

Today, the legacy of those remarkable dogs lives on through Alaska's mushing traditions and the stories that continue to inspire generations.

We're seeking someone with bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management experience to help oversee monthly financial reporting, reconciliations, compliance, and budgeting.

🐾 Exciting Progress in the Anchorage Mushing District! 🐾

The Anchorage Mushing District is moving forward with the next phase of our downtown enhancements — the bronze sled dogs and display stands that will be installed along 4th Avenue!

These beautiful additions will celebrate Anchorage's rich mushing heritage, honor the incredible sled dogs that helped shape Alaska, and create a unique downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.

We're excited to see this vision continue to come to life and can't wait to share more updates as the project progresses.

Stay tuned for installation updates and opportunities to support the project!
