On May 24, 2026, the Alaska State Troopers located human remains at a property in Soldotna. Evidence at the scene suggested that the death was suspicious in nature, and the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded and assumed case responsibility. The State Medical Examiner's Office positively identified the remains as belonging to 39-year-old Soldotna resident Derek Berry. Berry had been reported missing on May 7, 2026. His next of kin have been notified. The ABI investigation into the circumstances surrounding Berry's death is ongoing.

On June 9, 2026, Task Force Dawnbreaker contacted Brandon Moran, 41, of Ketchikan as part of a child sexual abuse material (CSAM) investigation. Following the contact, Moran was arrested without incident and charged with Possession of Child S*xual Abuse Material and Distribution of Child S*xual Abuse Material. Moran was remanded to the Ketchikan Correctional Center and is being held without bail.

Update 5/26: The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is continuing their investigation into the officer involved shooting that occurred on May 23, 2026, in Utqiagvik. The deceased male is identified as: 46-year-old Utqiagvik resident Gordon Killbear Jr. His next of kin have been notified and his body is at the State Medical Examiner's Office.

The North Slope Borough Police Officers who discharged their fi****ms during the incident are identified as:

- Sergeant Riley Weik, a two-year veteran of the North Slope Bourgh Police Department
- Officer Christopher Green, a ten-month veteran of the North Slope Borough Police Department

Original Release: On May 23, 2026, at 4:09pm, two Officers with the North Slope Borough Police Department (NSBPD) were involved in an Officer Involved Shooting after responding to a report of a DV Assault in Utqiagvik. During their response, they discovered the male suspect barricaded behind a door in the residence. While breaching the door, the suspect emerged with a knife, and both Officers discharged their handguns. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later declared deceased. One Officer received a minor injury from a knife during the incident. At the request of the NSBPD, Troopers with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded and assumed case responsibility. Once the ABI investigation is complete it will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

In January 2026, Task Force Dawnbreaker — comprised of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crimes Unit, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, and the Anchorage Police Department — initiated a child sexual abuse material investigation in the North Pole area after identifying an individual suspected of downloading hundreds of CSAM files online. The suspect was identified as Joshua Jarrett, 39, of North Pole.

On May 27, 2026, Jarrett was arrested without incident on an outstanding felony arrest warrant by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation and the Alaska State Troopers. He was remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center on ten counts of Possession of Child S*xual Abuse Material and is currently being held without bail.

On April 29, 2026, Task Force Dawnbreaker - consisting of Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crime Unit, and the US Dept. of Homeland Security Investigations, along with Kodiak AST Patrol, and Kodiak PD contacted Cecil Lime (age 70 of Kodiak) during a child sexual abuse material investigation. During the investigation it was determined that Lime had numerous online and social media accounts that were not registered on his S*x Offender Registry per requirements. Lime was arrested on Perjury, and FTR II charges without incident, and remanded to the Kodiak Jail on no bail.

Update: On April 6, 2026, the man who was shot by a Bethel Police Officer, Wassillie Larson, age 53, of Bethel, was arrested in Anchorage on two counts of Assault in the Third Degree. The arrest came following an investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation into his actions prior to the shooting.

Original: At the request of the Bethel Police Department, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Bethel on March 25, 2026, at approximately 4:05 am. A preliminary investigation indicates an adult male had been taken to the Bethel hospital earlier in the night after standing in the roadway and refusing to move onto the sidewalk. The man left the hospital before being seen and later returned to the roadway. Officers contacted the man a second time, at which point he produced a knife and refused multiple commands to drop it. The man then approached an officer while brandishing the knife, and the officer fired, striking him. The man was medevaced to an Anchorage-area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. No other injuries were reported to Troopers.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation's Western Alaska Major Crimes Unit has assumed case responsibility. Once their investigation is complete, it will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

On April 9, 2026, Task Force Dawnbreaker—comprised of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crime Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations—contacted Joseph William IV, age 23 of Wasilla, during the course of a child sexual abuse material (CSAM) investigation. The investigation was initiated after investigators identified a substantial quantity of suspected CSAM stored within an online storage account associated with Williams.

Williams was taken into custody without incident and arrested for Possession of Child S*xual Abuse Material. He was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held without bail.

In December 2024, Task Force Dawnbreaker—comprised of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crime Unit, the Anchorage Police Department, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations—made contact with Joshua Hamrick (age 24 of Florida) during a child sexual abuse material (CSAM) investigation. Hamrick was arrested in December 2024 for Possession of CSAM material.

On March 18, 2026, Hamrick was sentenced in a Fairbanks court under a plea agreement. Hamrick was sentenced to 4 years to serve with 2 suspended, and 15 years of SOR registration.

On March 18, 2026, Task Force Dawnbreaker—comprised of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crime Unit, the Anchorage Police Department, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations—made contact with Jeremy Morris, 26, of Kenai, in connection with a child sexual abuse material (CSAM) investigation.

The investigation revealed that Morris had downloaded and distributed CSAM across multiple online platforms. Morris was arrested without incident and charged with ten (10) counts of Possession of Child S*xual Abuse Material. He was remanded to Wildwood Correctional Center and is being held without bail.
