As we approach the Holiday Giving Season and express thanks for all we have, help support our search and rescue folks around the state by donating to the Alaska Search and Rescue Association. Any donation will be matched up to $15,000.00 by a very generous donor. Donations can be made at alaskasar.org. Donations are used to provide training and equipment to our members around the state.

Welcome to ASARA

The ASARA Board of Directors would like to thank all of you that have donated to the ASARA General Fund in 2021. With the matching grant we were able to bank ~ $30k to go toward training of ASARA members. A special thanks to the Jim and Vicki Jansen Foundation for their generous donation and John Rodgers for making that possible.

14 deaths across the United States in the first 10 days of February, including three here in Alaska, highlight the dangers associated with avalanches. In an average year there are between 20 and 30 deaths nation-wide in an entire winter season. Please be careful out there. ASARA extends our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and everyone impacted by these tragedies.

On January 29th, ASARA President Jim Mullin and AMRG Vice President Mark Miraglia presented a two-hour virtual training session on avalanche safety and awareness to the Blackhawk Troop (Cavalry), U.S. Army, on JBER. The unit reached out to AMRG via the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center. The training helped them understand the complexities of operating in avalanche terrain and the training required and available from the civilian sector to mitigate avalanche risks in peacetime training and recreational environments and provide a basis for them to understand how to compare the risks under combat conditions.
