With the passage of HB 26 on May 10th, 2024, and it going into law without signature on August 29, 2024, the ANLPAC is now officially the Council for Alaska Native Languages (CANL).
HB 26 also transfers CANL from the Division of Community and Regional Affairs (DCRA) within the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED), effective November 29, 2024.
HB 26 also increases the number of officially recognized Alaska Native languages from 20 to 23, distinguishing Cup'ig from Yup'ik/Cup'ik, distinguishing Benhti Kokhwt’ana Kenaga’ (Lower Tanana) from Sahcheeg xut'een xneege' (Middle Tanana) [formerly grouped together just as"Tanana"], and recognizing Wetaɬ (Ts'etsa’ut), the first Alaska Native language to become dormant in the 20th century.
HB 26 also adds two, new voting positions on the Council, raising the number now to seven voting members and two, non-voting legislative members.
