According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Anchorage is about 67 percent White, 8 percent Asian or Pacific Islander, 7 percent Native, 6.8 percent Multiracial, 6.7 percent Latino and 4.2 percent Black. It is TIME to CHOOSE and elect a Mayor who will make Anchorage a better place to live, work, and raise a family. A Mayor who values our ethnic diversity and consider it our strength. Tuesday was the last town hall meeting on those policies. The school board is scheduled to vote on them at their next meeting on April 6th.

I have taken pictures of benches leaning towards the lake, appearing to fall with the next high water, perhaps after a heavy rain or a sudden and quick melting of the snow and ice. One of the benches was removed last summer, perhaps by park maintenance. I suppose this bench was place to sit and reflect of times gone by and vivid only in the memories of those who cherished another. University Lake is a place of little anger and much tail wagging as dogs greet each other, sniff and run off to meet the others. There seems to be many who cherish the quiet and the peace among those who seek only that quiet period and place to think, remember and reflect. If I were asked two words to describe the moods of the walkers, runners, skiers and bikers, I suppose they would be in the expansive meanings of tolerance and acceptance, the two meanings most likely to deliver inner peace to the individual and the greater community.

Art reflects the beauty the individual sees. Often we all see something different. On this day of brightness and chills I thought of the growing diversity of Anchorage and the hope of the increasing numbers of BIPOC who are eager to be accepted with a seat at the table. We all heard some fine speeches of inclusion, acceptance and fairness each citizen and resident is entitled to. What was not in the speeches were the politics behind the stage. Some may say we are transparent, but then there are those, such as I, who believe otherwise. So, as we go through these final days of the school board campaign, it certainly would be a good thing for the progressives who are believers of diversity and inclusion to consider the thousands of underprivileged BIPOC, many of who are like myself, Alaska Native. If you want an Alaska Native to sit at the table, to be a part of the policy-making team of low achievements of Native students for a half century or so - right here in Anchorage . . . well, you know what to do. If that happens, you may just see another shine in that beautiful piece of art.
