WE ARE MORE THAN A MEAL — WE ARE COMMUNITY

“Someone actually made this for me?”

Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness leave the biggest impact.

When nearly 75 volunteers from Edwards Lifesciences, including members of their Human Resources and Global HR teams, gathered to create care bags, handmade placemats, and heartfelt cards, they weren’t just assembling gifts; they were building community.

After learning about the challenges many older adults face, they filled every bag, every card, and every placemat with one simple but powerful message:

You matter.

Thank you, Edwards Lifesciences! Your generosity reminds us that sometimes, simply knowing someone cares can mean everything.

At Meals on Wheels Orange County, a meal may bring us to someone’s door, but connection, compassion, and community make the difference.

Even though glaucoma has stolen most of Robert’s sight, he keeps an upbeat attitude and maintains a healthy lifestyle that helps him live his best life possible. Staying mentally and physically active while eating a nutrition-packed diet provided by Meals on Wheels OC has been his tried-and-true recipe for sustaining the independent lifestyle he loves.

Robert first learned about Meals on Wheels years ago when he noticed a delivery to his neighbor. Little did he know then that he would later benefit from the service. Robert’s limited vision prevents him from driving and cooking, so the convenience of home deliveries and easy-to-prepare meals has been life-changing. Robert loves knowing he can count on getting the healthy nutrition he needs with each Meals on Wheels OC delivery.

“I’m a bachelor, and I wasn’t eating right. I underestimated the importance of good nutrition. One of my most wonderful things is vegetables because I was never inclined to buy vegetables. Now I eat vegetables, and I’m getting healthy! Meals on Wheels OC has been a blessing in disguise.”

Robert also appreciates the reliable and friendly deliveries. “The deliveries are prompt, like clockwork and they are the nicest, most wonderful delivery people.”

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting a kitchen tour and taste-test of some of our culturally diverse menu items. These menus were created over the last year and offer meals inspired by the tastes and traditions of Orange County's diverse population. These dishes were created after receiving feedback from Meals on Wheels Orange County participants who were looking for more familiar meals that felt like home.

Jerry and Darlene have been married for 52 years. In their earlier years, they worked hard, raised their family, and planned for retirement. When retirement finally arrived in 1999, the couple toured the country in an RV for over a decade while also helping support the needs of their grandchildren. Each day was an adventure and often a challenge to live comfortably on their fixed retirement budget. Now, 25 years later, the couple is struggling to find ways to stretch the same budget to cover living expenses that have risen exponentially over the years. In addition to financial concerns, Darlene has been coping with debilitating physical ailments that have become so chronic that she has great difficulty going grocery shopping and preparing meals.

Thankfully, it wasn’t long before Darlene read an article about Meals on Wheels OC and learned that volunteers and staff from Meals on Wheels OC could deliver nutritious, heart-healthy meals for the entire week. All Darlene and Jerry needed to do was to pop them in the microwave. No cooking or clean-up! This was the perfect solution to meet the couple’s nutritional needs.

It has been more than two years since Meals on Wheels OC began making life easier. “The meals are very well built and satisfying, and the deliveries are reliable and friendly,” said Darlene. Meals on Wheels offers good nutrition and a wide variety. It is a true value!”

We're still riding the excitement from our 2026 Pickleball Tournament! Thank you to everyone who played, sponsored, volunteered, and cheered us on. Together, we rallied for a cause that serves more than a meal; helping provide nutritious meals, friendly visits, and vital support to older adults across Orange County.

Happy National Friendship Day!

A Friendly Visit Can Change Everything.

Marie is forever grateful for the nutritious meals delivered by Meals on Wheels Orange County volunteers. While the meals help keep her healthy, there was something else she needed just as much: connection.

"I’m very satisfied with the meals. They are fantastic, but I can’t get out of the house, and I get lonely,” Marie shared.

Through our Friendly Visitor Program, Marie was matched with volunteer Wendi. What began as a simple weekly visit has grown into a meaningful friendship built on conversation, laughter, and shared experiences.

"I love learning from her wisdom, hearing her stories, and it truly fills my heart to take just an hour out of my day to spend time with someone who has no visitors. I spend my whole week around people, and I forget how grateful I am for that." -Wendi, Friendly Visitor Volunteer
