25 years ago today our world changed.

For those old enough, a “where were you” moment was created and our lives will be forever linked to that harrowing day. For those younger, that different world was all they kinew.

Today we remember September 11th, 2001.

More than just the innocence lost of a generation, we remember the heartbreak for those who will never return: workers, travelers, families, husbands, mothers, children.

And we remember our firefighters and first responders and other brave heroes from that day who risked everything to save precious lives. Never forget.

Today is Labor Day and we want to wish a heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude for the unions and workers who marched and protested many years ago to make this holiday possible.

Today we also acknowledge that the struggle isn’t over and the fight for worker’s rights and justice continues everyday!

Today, the DPOC along with millions around the world, mourns the passing of celebrated author and icon Gloria Steinem.

Few women have done more to advance the cause of equality and women’s rights over a career that spanned decades than Ms. Steinem, who founded Ms. magazine and as a journalist was instrumental in uncovering discrimination at all levels.

As a proud “feminist” she fought to give that word fresh meaning and was an ally to oppressed women around the world, speaking against injustice well into her 80’s. She founded the National Women’s Political Caucus in 1971 along with Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, and Bella Abzug.

Rest in Power Gloria Steinem and thank you for being a voice for the voiceless and a role model for women everywhere!

The Democratic Party of Orange County is proud to announce our keynote speaker and recipient of the Profiles i. courage award: California Attorney General Rob Bonta!

Born in the Philippines and immigrating to California with his family as an infant, Rob Bonta’s passion for service and standing up for the underprivileged was inspired by his parents, who fought on the frontlines of some of America’s most important social justice movements, including working directly with the United Farm Workers and marching with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama in 1965.

First elected to the State Assembly in 2010, he was the first Filipino-American elected to the California Legislature and upon his appointment by Governor Newsom to be Attorney General in 2021, became the first Filipino-American to hold statewide office in California history.

As California’s Attorney General, Bonta has been on the front lines in the battle against the lawlessness of the Trump Administration. He has led California’s efforts against Trump’s corruption, self-dealing, and his attacks on democracy and our healthcare. He stood up to Trump and halted predatory mergers. He’s taken on corporate price-gouging, deception by big oil companies, and is tackling the state’s housing crisis. He has also fought for common-sense gun reforms and sought accountability on behalf of consumers throughout the state.

For all this and more, the Democratic Party of Orange County is proud to welcome Attorney General Rob Bonta as our keynote speaker for the 31st Annual Harry S. Truman Awards Dinner and will also bestow him with our Profiles in Courage Award! Well earned and congratulations!

The DPOC is so proud to announce our Truman Award recipient this year, Senator Tom Umberg!

State Senator Thomas J. Umberg is a retired army Colonel, former federal and military prosecutor, Clinton Administration alumnus, small business owner, 3-term State Assemblyman, and current State Senator where he serves California as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Beginning with his military service, Senator Umberg has one of the most distinguished careers of any Democrat in Orange County history, giving a lifetime of duty to the public and spending nearly four decades in faithful service to Orange County’s families and residents.

Recently, Senator Umberg authored the “No Kings” law to prevent Donald Trump from appearing on the ballot in California again and backed legislation demanding accountability and unmasking ICE Agents while protecting civil rights for all Californians. Now, Senator Umberg is running for Board of Equalization and is the endorsed Democrat running in District 4!

Whether it’s standing up to Donald Trump, protecting working families or supporting other local Democrats, Senator Umberg has always had our back!
