You don’t have to light illegal fireworks yourself to be cited in Anaheim.

Under Anaheim’s host liability ordinance, homeowners, business owners and property operators who knowingly allow illegal fireworks on their property can be held responsible, even if someone else lights them.

Citations can range from $1,000 to $3,000 and may be issued by mail based on evidence gathered by Anaheim Police air support resources.

Only Safe and Sane fireworks are allowed in Anaheim, and only on July 4.

No fireworks of any kind are allowed in east Anaheim, city parks or public streets.

With no threat to Anaheim, here’s where the Boyle Heights warehouse fire is burning near Downtown Los Angeles.

The smoke plume is remotely visible from parts of Anaheim and is about 20 miles away from the closest point in our city.

A full firefighting response is underway, including helicopter water drops.

The fire is on the roof of a roughly 500,000-square-foot warehouse in Boyle Heights between downtown and the 710 Freeway.

For the area immediately around the fire, a smoke advisory is in place, and the Los Angeles Fire Department has issued a shelter-in-place order around the fire.

It’s possible we smell the fire in Anaheim, though wind is moving smoke away from our city.

This is for awareness only, including for those who may be driving through the area. Again, there is no threat to our city.

We continuously monitor Anaheim Fire & Rescue calls and regional emergency responses and will provide updates if an incident directly impacts Anaheim.

Fires in our region serve as an important reminder to stay alert, aware and prepared. Learn more about emergency preparedness at Anaheim.net/BeReady.

Low-interest federal disaster loans are available for small businesses and nonprofits impacted by the Garden Grove chemical incident.

Loans are open to Anaheim and other impacted small businesses, nonprofits and faith organizations.
Proceeds can be used to pay debt, payroll, bills and other items impacted by the May 21-26 incident.

Loans are up to $2 million and start at 4% for businesses and 3.6% for nonprofits and are spread out over 30 years with a one-year grace period for payments and interest.

Loan amounts and terms are set based on individual situations.

Apply at sba.gov/disaster or a Garden Grove assistance center:

* Business Recovery Center
* Euclid Office Building, first floor
* 12966 Euclid St., Garden Grove
* Hours: 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Monday-Friday; closed Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth state holiday
* More: (800) 659-2955; [email protected]

For impacted residents: We continue to monitor and look for any additional help, beyond the now-closed United Way Orange County's OC Community Resilience Fund set up with $3 million from GKN Aerospace.

Because a private company is responsible for the incident, we are not seeing sources of resident assistance typically seen with a fire, storm or other natural disaster.

There are several pending lawsuits against GKN Aerospace that residents can consider. The city of Anaheim is not involved in litigation at this time and cannot refer to any specific firm or claim.

Anaheim is taking a tougher stance on illegal fireworks this year.

You’ll see patrols on the ground and in the air with fines up to $3,000.

Homeowners can be held liable for allowing illegal fireworks on their property, whether they light them or not, with citations by mail, without warning.

It’s not worth it.

Only Safe and Sane fireworks are allowed in Anaheim, and only on July 4 from 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

Things are getting back to normal in west Anaheim after a challenging holiday weekend.

More than 6,000 west Anaheim residents are thankfully back as of Monday night and getting back to normal today after evacuating for the Garden Grove incident.

For many in west Anaheim, returning home means coming back to a distinct style of mid-century modern house known as a Cinderella home.

They date back to the early 1950s and draw inspiration from the 1950 Disney animated classic “Cinderella.”

Many predate Disneyland’s 1955 opening, though the park went on to boost their appeal.

They stand out with steep, swooping gables, cedar-shake roofs, diamond-paned windows and other bright, storybook touches.

A 1950s postwar boom saw plain, boxy houses go up quickly across Anaheim and beyond.

To stand out, builder Jean Vandruff added storybook charm to his houses while still keeping them in reach for families.

They were an instant hit. Anaheim’s own Austin Butler even grew up in a west Anaheim Cinderella home!

You can find Cinderella homes across Anaheim and Southern California.

But west Anaheim is really where it all started. The first one-off is in Downey, and we are home to the first tracts.

Photos shown here are in and around the evacuated area near Dale Street.

Our thoughts go out to all impacted in west Anaheim with this celebration of something that makes the area special.
