The Port of Anacortes is proud of the continued progress in our emissions reduction goals, and we’re excited to share that several older fleet gas vehicles are being replaced thanks to a grant from WSDOT. These new, cleaner-running hybrid and EV vehicles will help reduce emissions, improve air quality, and support a more sustainable future for Anacortes.

A huge thank you to WSDOT for partnering with us on this important step toward a greener, healthier waterfront. More improvements are on the way as we continue working to reduce our environmental impact and invest in long term sustainability.

Together, we’re driving positive change—one vehicle at a time!

Did you know? The waters due east to our favorite human gathering place—Seafarers’ Memorial Park—are also a favorite marine creature gathering place.

Why is that? These waters host vibrant eelgrass beds, which is critical habitat for many marine species. Ensuring our local marine habitats remain intact serves innumerable marine species – providing nursing grounds and safe harbor for small fish and invertebrates (like Dungeness crab), which feed salmon, seals, orca and other species. In turn, these species benefit the people who rely on the Port for work and recreation!

“Protecting eelgrass supports the economic development part of the Port’s mission, not just our environmental stewardship goals,” said Kevin Anderson, Planning, Projects, & Environmental Manager at the Port. “Healthy eelgrass beds are a great nursery for economically important marine species. In turn, these species feed salmon, seals, orcas, and more, and benefit all types of Port users: commercial fishers that use our facilities, recreational fisher visiting Cap Sante Marina, and the guests sailing on vessels in hopes to see whales and other charismatic macrofauna.”
