Sara Holahan for Anacortes City Council

Sara Holahan for Anacortes City Council I'm a candidate for City Council because climate change is the most crucial issue facing us and I will be a strong advocate for action at the city level.

We can all work together from planting street trees to promoting solar energy. Vote for me. Thanks! I would like to serve on council to provide a strong voice for our citizens and our environment. Anacortes is fortunate to have abundant natural beauty and we have to take care of it. I would advocate for more resources directed at managing our community forest lands, protecting our local waters and

critical areas. Anacortes is experiencing rapid change, and it’s important to preserve what’s best about this place, including our natural resources and small-town atmosphere. We can create a greener urban landscape including planting strips along sidewalks and a functioning Street Tree Committee as required in our municipal code. We have a very active, involved senior population and I would seek expanded opportunities with our senior center and robust volunteer programs. As your councilmember, I will listen carefully and devote extensive time preparing for and attending council meetings. While deputy library director for Mount Vernon, I had hands-on experience with city government operations, budgeting, personnel and planning. Anacortes has been my home for 22 years, and my children benefited from our excellent schools, parks and caring people. I envision improved communication between government, residents and neighborhoods. Together we can make Anacortes even better. I look forward to serving you. More about my experience:

What is a Climate Change Action Plan and why does Anacortes need it? A plan would cover important areas like energy efficiency, transportation, waste reduction and education. As is clear from recent intense heat waves, forest fires and floods, we can't keep pushing out action on climate change and it starts with each of us and our town. Look at this example from Burlington, Vermont.

Elections should be about choice and the discussion of ideas. Here are my main goals:
1. Climate change is the most crucial issue facing us and the city needs to do more to address this, starting with a Climate Change Action Plan.
2. We need solutions to housing that address affordability and efficiency while not causing so much harm to existing neighborhoods.
3. The street tree ordinance needs to be made robust with a citywide environmental improvement plan.
4. City council needs more representation from our diverse population including women and seniors.
5. The city can do more to listen to citizens, to have neighborhood councils, to have committees such as the transportation committee that includes residents.

The United Nations Climate Change Report is a wake-up call. The science is in. We need to act! Can you envision a low-carbon future?

Climate change is widespread and intensifying says the latest IPCC report. It underscores the urgency of strong, sustained cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Read the report.
