May is Mental Health Awareness Month đź’š

At IPH, we see a high percentage of individuals living with mental and/or behavioral health conditions. At admission, approximately 33% guests report having a mental health condition.

All IPH guests, including those with mental health needs, have direct access to our case managers, who provide person-centered support to meet each individual’s unique needs. Case managers work with guests to develop a plan to achieve their goals. Each plan is broken into action steps with case managers providing assistance and access to additional resources needed for achievement.

In our experience, the chronically homeless – particularly those with mental and behavioral concerns – are unsuccessful finding shelter, retaining housing or gaining employment without case managers, who provide critical support on the road to self-sufficiency and stability. Our case managers are a critical part of IPH’s approach to addressing mental health needs in the community.

For the past 15 years, spring has welcomed the return of A Taste of Albany, a key fundraiser for IPH's programs and services. It has been our honor to introduce you to some of our city’s best restaurants while raising critical funds for homeless individuals and low-income families in our community.

It's no secret that the pandemic has introduced new challenges and shifted norms, resulting in long-lasting effects and creating an increased level of need for those we serve. As such, we believe now is the time to shift our energy to initiatives that truly align with our mission and help educate the community about how we can best support individuals experiencing or facing homelessness.

For this reason, we have made the difficult decision not to host A Taste of Albany in 2022. We will always be grateful for the incredible enthusiasm you've shown this event and hope you’ll continue to support IPH in the years to come.

While we are saddened by this development, we are excited to introduce a new initiative: the IPH Giving Catalog – launching May 18! The interactive online platform will welcome you to browse and symbolically purchase items related to IPH’s programs, such as a night of shelter, nutritious meals or welcome kits for housing tenants. With each purchase, you’ll make a meaningful gift that will be put to immediate use for our neighbors in need. We can’t wait to share more information about the Giving Catalog in the coming weeks.

Again, our deepest appreciation to all the individuals, organizations and restaurants that have supported A Taste of Albany over the last 15 years. Enjoy this look back at A Taste of Albany over the years! We couldn’t have done it without you. ❤

Guests at Danielle’s House will be riding in style thanks to a pair of incredibly generous donors who gifted us a new van! 🚚

Accessible transportation is so important for our guests, who often rely on us to bring them to critical appointments, such as doctor’s visits, job interviews and apartment viewings – or even to help them move into a new apartment!

All our thanks to these very special donors for the new wheels!

In celebration of National Social Work Month, we’re highlighting how IPH’s social workers use their education and background in different ways to help individuals experiencing homelessness.

Julie Demarest is Operations Director for IPH with 20 years of human services experience, predominantly providing direct care to individuals experiencing homelessness.
